Tasiopoulos' 39-save shutout helps Skyhawks to first win of 2014

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (January 15, 2014) – Led by a 39-save shutout from junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) and the first goal of the season for sophomore forward Garrett White (Wakefield, Mass./Pomfret School), the Stonehill College ice hockey team defeated Becker College 2-0 tonight in non-conference action at the New England Sports Center.

Tasiopoulos, who has already posted two shutouts this season, earned his third tonight by turning back 13 shots in the first period, 11 in the second, and 15 in the final period to help the Skyhawks earn their first win of the calendar year. The junior also recorded clean sheets against Assumption College on November 13th and Trinity College on December 5th, and he now has four in his career.

White, a sophomore transfer who was playing in his first game in a Stonehill uniform tonight, scored 2:02 into the second period with a shot that rattled into the net off the crossbar. Senior captain Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) and sophomore defenseman Scott Rolph (Bow, N.H./Tilton School) provided the assists on White's tally.

The Skyhawks doubled their lead just one minute and 48 seconds later, as sophomore forward Kevin Airoldi (Kennebunk, Maine/Berwick Academy) scored his second goal of the season with the help of junior Stephen Balsamo (Atkinson, N.H./Brewster Academy).

Becker sophomore netminder Gregg Hussey (Medford, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) was solid between the pipes despite taking the loss tonight, as he stopped 37 of the 39 shots that came his way, including 28 in the first two periods.

Stonehill (7-9-0, 3-0-0 Northeast-10) will be back in action on Monday night at NE-10 rival Saint Michael's College. The contest will be Stonehill's first in conference play since its 10-3 victory over Franklin Pierce University on November 30th. The Skyhawks will return to the Foxboro Sports Center, where they haven't played since December 11th, on January 25th against Southern New Hampshire University. Becker (1-12-2, 0-3-2 ECAC NE) will look to snap its seven-game losing streak next Tuesday against Worcester State.
