Skyhawks five-game win streak halted in first action on 43-days

WESTFIELD, Mass. (January 21, 2010) - Stonehill College returned to the ice for the first time in 43 days and was defeated by Westfield State College in non-conference ice hockey action at Amelia Park tonight.

Junior Dennis Zak (Dover, N.J.) led Westfield State with a goal and assist, while classmate Ryan Monroe (Shrewsbury, Mass.) posted 39 saves in goal for the Owls to preserve the victory. Juniors Dylan Scanlon (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Drew LaCombe (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman Lucas Romero (Roho Sta Marg, Calif.) also netted goals for WSC.

Stonehill got goals from senior Christopher Rogers (Westford, Mass./Pomfret Academy) and sophomore Andrew Diozzi (Belmont, Mass./Deerfield). Sophomore goaltender Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished with 28 saves in goal for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill posted a 41-32 advantage in shots on goal for the contest, including a 30-23 edge over the final two periods. The Skyhawks were 1-for-7 on the power play, while holding Westfield State scoreless on six tries with a man-advantage. Stonehill has now killed off 33-straight power plays by its opponents dating back to the second period of its last loss before tonight against the University of Massachusetts Boston on November 28. 


Senior Christopher Rogers scored his second goal of the year.

The teams skated through a scoreless opening period before Westfield State opened the scoring 11:09 into the second period when Romero scored his sixth goal of the season with a wrist shot from the point, assisted by senior Casey Mignone (Ramsey, N.J.) and sophomore Jimmy Alexander (Braintree, Mass.). The Owls doubled their lead 2:11 before the second intermission as Scanlon netted his first of the season, assisted by Zak and sophomore Pat Nelson (Cary, N.C.). WSC extended its lead to three goals 5:54 into the third period with LaCombe's first of the season, assisted by sophomore Brandon Castro (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Jason Nelson (Raleigh, N.C.).

Stonehill broke through 36-seconds later when Diozzi potted his team-leading ninth goal of the season, assisted by senior Zachary Cantin (Saugus, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial), at 6:30. Zak regained Westfield State's three-goal lead at 10:50 with his seventh marker of the season, before Rogers capped the scoring with his second of the year on the power play with 1:10 to go in regulation, assisted by senior Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) and sophomore Bill Harris (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth).

Stonehill (7-7-1, 1-2-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday night when it visits Assumption College for a key Northeast-10 Conference clash at 6:35 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Thursday, January 28, to host Wentworth Institute of Technology at the Foxboro Sports Center at 7 p.m. Westfield State (9-4-2, 6-0-2 MASCAC) hosts Fitchburg State College on Saturday at 5:35 p.m.
