FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (January 30, 2010) - Franklin Pierce University scored three third period goals to skate away with a 7-4 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action at the Foxborough Sports Center this afternoon. The win clinches the two NE-10 points in the regular season series for the Ravens against Stonehill.

Freshman Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) led the way for Franklin Pierce with five points on three goals and two assists. All three goals were unassisted, with two coming shorthanded, including the game-winner with the Ravens two men down. Sophomore Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass./Williston-Northampton) added two goals and two assists for four points, while senior Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H.) posted a goal and two assists for three points. Freshman Jonathan Schanke (Wallingford, Conn.) chipped in with a goal and assist for the Ravens.

Sophomore Andrew Diozzi (Belmont, Mass./Deerfield) led Stonehill with a goal and assist. Senior captain Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) extended his point streak to four games with a goal, while sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and freshman Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) each added a goal as well.

Sophomore Ben Siok (Holden, Mass./St. John's-Shrewsbury) picked up the relief win in goal for Franklin Pierce, stopping all 16 shots he faced over the final 32:54. Senior Jon Tuttle (Concord, N.H./Concord) made 13 saves (11 first period) over the opening 27:06. Sophomore Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) posted 16 saves over the final 45:58 in relief for Stonehill. Junior Michael Manna (Framingham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) made four saves in the opening 14:02.

Stonehill finished with a 33-27 edge in shots on goal, but Franklin Pierce dominated special teams, converting on 2-of-6 power play chances while adding two shorthanded goals, including Sweeney's game-winner with the Ravens two skaters down early in the third period. The Skyhawks came up empty on nine power-play opportunities.

After the two teams traded goals in the opening eight minutes, Franklin Pierce looked like it would run away and hide with three goals in the span of 3:12 to open a 4-1 lead. Schanke started the surge with a power-play goal, assisted by LaBreck and Chighisola, at 10:50. Sweeney then potted two-straight unassisted tallies, the latter shorthanded at 14:02.

Stonehill got one goal back at 16:23 of the first period when Diozzi set up Greene for his fifth goal of the season. The Skyhawks scored the only two goals of the second period to complete the comeback and knot the score at 4-4. Roundy netted his sixth of the season, assisted by freshman Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), 5:42 into the second period. Borges knotted the game with his second of the season, assisted by freshman George DeMello (Cotuit, Mass./Tabor Academy), at 7:06.

Franklin Pierce skated away with the game in the third. Sweeney finished off his unassisted hat trick 1:33 into a two-man shorthanded stretch to put the Ravens in front for good. Franklin Pierce added a pair of insurance goals in the closing minutes. Chighisola netted his 14th of the season, assisted by Sweeney and LaBreck, at 17:12, before LaBreck added his ninth of the season, assisted by Chighisola and senior Steve Della-Calce (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pope John XXII), at 18:34 to cap the scoring.

Prior to the game, the Stonehill ice hockey team recognized James Bellew, brother of assistant coach Joe Bellew, a member of the US Army Rangers who is back in the United States on leave during his second of four scheduled tours in Afghanistan. Bellew was presented with an "Extraordinary Service Award" plaque and he served as honorary coach for the afternoon.

Stonehill (7-10-1, 1-4-0 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it visits Framingham State College for its final non-conference contest of the season at 7:20 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday to host Assumption College at 5 p.m. Please note the time change on the game. Franklin Pierce (5-13-2, 2-4-1 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University next Saturday at 7 p.m.
