Solorzano Valencia a double-winner for Skyhawks

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 24, 2022) – Providence College posted a tightly contested 6-1 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference women's tennis match at PC Tennis Courts today. 

Highlights

  • Seniors Katie Mulvey and Vannelie Melendez were double-winners to lead Providence. Mulvey dropped just a single game across her singles and doubles wins for the day as the duo helped the Friars clinch the doubles point with their 6-0 win at No. 2.
  • Senior Emmie Lindholm and sophomore Elisa Davalos clinched the doubles point for Providence with their 6-3 win at No. 3.
  • Senior Julia Migliorini, sophomore Lauren Carson and freshman Mae Abreu also earned singles wins for the Friars.
  • Senior Cristina Solorzano Valencia was a double-winner to lead Stonehill on the day. She and classmate Steffi Antao posted a win at No. 1 doubles for the Skyhawks.

How it Happened

  • Providence won the doubles point, 2-1, with Lindholm and Davalos clinching it with their 6-3 win at No. 3 after Mulvey and Melendez swept their way to the win at No. 2.
  • The Friars sewed up the win by taking five of the six singles matches, but not without a fight from Stonehill.
  • Mulvey posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles over Stonehill freshman Annaliese Beltran.
  • Carson topped freshman Camila Zuluaga Rodriguez 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for the Friars after Abreu dropped just a game on her way to a win at No. 6.
  • Solorzano Valencia held off Providence freshman Darah Ross 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to finish her second win of the day at No. 1 singles.
  • Migliorini needed a third set tiebreaker to finish of her double-win day, edging Stonehill senior Lily Peter 6-7 (7-1), 6-1, 10-2.
  • Melendez also needed a third set tiebreaker to finish her second win of the day, battling past sophomore Marissa Such 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 at No. 5 singles.

Stonehill (3-2, 0-0 NEC) returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits College of the Holy Cross for a non-conference match in Worcester, Massachusetts, at 5 p.m. Providence (1-0, 0-0 Big East) will next join the Skyhawks at Dartmouth College next weekend for the ITA Regionals in Hanover, New Hampshire.
