#16 Assumption Holds Off Women's Lacrosse, 15-11

Olivia's Catanzarite and Angelo combine for ten goals, 13 points, in Greyhounds opener

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 20, 2021) – Assumption College, ranked No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II coaches poll, went on a 12-0 run to close out the first half and then held off a Stonehill College comeback in the second half, to secure a season-opening 15-11 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Brian Kelly Stadium this afternoon.

How it Happened

  • Assumption College scored 12-straight goals to close out the first half that turned a one-goal deficit into an 11-goal halftime lead. The Greyhounds held off a second half Stonehill run to secure their season-opening win.
  • Stonehill grabbed a pair of leads in the opening ten minutes on markers from senior Olivia Pino and junior Kendall Fressle.
  • Assumption responded with the next 12 goals, including five from freshman Olivia Catanzarite and four by senior Olivia Angelo to take an 11-goal lead (13-2) into halftime. The 12-goal run all came within a 17-minute span.
  • Stonehill scored three of the first four goals in the second half to close within nine (14-5) after Fressle's second of the game with 18:22 remaining.
  • After sophomore Jenna Joseph scored a free-position goal to stretch Assumption's lead back to ten (15-5) with 14:16 remaining, Stonehill made one final push, scoring the final six goals of the afternoon, including three by Fressle, to pull within four with 2:17 to play, but could get no closer.

Noteworthy

  • Fressle's five goals are a season-high and her highest goal output since potting a career-high six in her Stonehill debut in 2019.
  • Freshman Molly Mae Hughes added a goal and assist this afternoon to finish the first week of her collegiate career with four goals and two assists for six points.
  • Junior Emma Sullivan contributed a goal, assist, six draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Catanzarite led Assumption with six goals and an assist for seven points, while Angelo tallied six points, with four goals and two assists, with three ground balls.
  • Senior Kaleigh Wright made her first career start in the Stonehill goal.

Stonehill (0-2, 0-2 NE10) is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 p.m. Outside fans will not be permitted to attend the game in Manchester, New Hampshire, in conjunction with the NE10's current spectator policy, but the game will be available via NE10 NOW.
