Women's Hockey Falls to LIU in Weekend Finale

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 18, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Long Island University (LIU) in the two-game weekend finale on Saturday. With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 7-9 overall and 7-5 in conference play, while the Sharks improve to 10-4 overall and 10-0 against conference opponents.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Lily Geist netted her third goal of the season.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone got the start in between the pipes where she posted 39 saves.
  • Freshman Grace Babbington scored her first career goal for the Sharks, while junior Jeannie Wallner netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
  • Senior Mikayla Lantto led LIU with three points on the afternoon off a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Junior netminder Tindra Holm picked up the win in goal for LIU after stopping 24 of the 25 shots she faced on the afternoon.

How it Happened

  • LIU came out of the gates strong as senior Maggie Culp glanced a shot off the crossbar less than 90 seconds into the opening frame.
  • However, throughout the remaining 18 minutes of the first period, both sides would go back and forth, trading shots and playing to a scoreless game after the opening 20 minutes of action.
  • In the second period, Stone and the Skyhawks defense would stand tall and keep the Sharks off the board, stopping all 18 shots on goal and killing off the third power play opportunity of the game for LIU.
  • Stonehill would start the third period with 1:48 left on its second power play opportunity. However, despite being held scoreless on the advantage on the ice, the Skyhawks would find the back of the net for the game's first goal at the 4:27 mark of the third off the stick of Geist.
  • Midway through the third, the Sharks would light the lamp, netting the equalizer after Lantto scored her first of two on the day.
  • With less than five minutes to play in regulation tied at one apiece, Babington would score her first collegiate goal, the eventual game-winner.
  • LIU would tack two more goals on the board in the final minute to seal the 4-1 victory and remain undefeated at 10-0 in conference play.

Noteworthy

  • Junior Josie Mendeszoon and sophomore Maddison Achtyl dished out their respective fourth and sixth assists of the season.
  • The Sharks now lead the all-time series between the two sides, 5-0-1.
  • Stonehill's penalty kill unit stifled the LIU power play, going three for three while shorthanded throughout the game.
  • The Skyhawks have now killed off 65-69 penalties on the year for a .942 percentage which ranks third across NCAA Division I leaderboards.
