Women’s Hockey Falls in NEWHA Matchup, 4-2, at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 20, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team fell in a NEWHA conference matchup at the Sullivan Arena against Saint Anselm College, 4-2, on Friday night.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Gracie Sacca scored her team-leading second goal of the season, while freshman Pusle Dyring-Andersen scored her first collegiate goal, as well as her first collegiate point.
  • Sophomore Alexis Petford assisted on her team-leading fourth helper of the season.
  • Junior goaltender Hanna Zukow stopped 33 shots on net for the Skyhawks.

How it Happened

  • Saint Anselm opened the scoring early in the first period when Gracee Donovan handled a pass from Kyra Anderson on the left side of the crease where she slotted a left-handed wrist shot to the back right corner of the net past Zukow.
  • The Skyhawks tied it at 10:02 in the first period when Petford backhanded a pass off the boards to Sacca who flicked a wrist shot on net that sneaked past the Hawks goaltender to tie things up 1-1.
  • Minutes later, Stonehill would take the lead when Dyring-Andersen snagged a loose puck off the boards when a Saint A's skater tried to clear it, but she found herself open in the middle of the offensive zone, blasting a wrist shot to the bottom right corner of the net past the goalie with the help of a Lily Geist screen.
  • Saint Anselm re-tied the score, 2-2, at 17:34 of the first period when a loose puck off a Brooklyn Schneiderhan shot landed in front of Natalie Tulchinsky in front of the crease where she buried it past Zuko.
  • Saint Anselm retook the lead at 15:52 of the second period when Savannah Popick netted a wrist shot off the outstretched glove of Zukow that would ultimately end up as the game-winning goal for the Hawks.
  • Maddy McCaffery netted an empty-net goal from the opposite end of the ice, putting up an insurance point for the Hawks with just 48 seconds remaining in the game as Saint Anselm went on to win 4-2.

Noteworthy

  • Saint Anselm improved to 5-1 all-time against Stonehill, winning their second in a row dating back to last season when the Hawks defeated the Skyhawks 4-2 to advance to the NEWHA Championship.
  • Saint Anselm outshot Stonehill 37-31 and won the faceoff battle 38-26.
  • The Skyhawks went 1-5 on the power play while the Hawks went 1-3.
