Softball Comes Up Short in 7th-Inning Come Back Bid

Theilgard sent out her first-career grand slam in the top of the seventh

RINDGE, New Hampshire (May 4, 2021) – The seventh-seeded Stonehill College softball team (5-24, 4-20 NE10) came up short against second-seeded Franklin Pierce University (20-7, 18-6 NE10) in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Bisaccia Field.

Stonehill scored the first run of the game in the top of the first with two outs and runners on the corners, as Julia Perrone reached on an error and Ricker crossed home for a 1-0 lead. The Skyhawks lead was short lived as the Ravens' put up three runs in the bottom of the frame as Hinckley's hit bounced off the top of the fence for a three-run homerun to right center, 3-1.

Franklin Pierce took a 6-1 lead scoring two runs in the second and one in the third off of six hits. In just a little over four innings, Franklin Pierce's Zemaitis retired 14-straight batters, keeping the Skyhawks off base.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Madi Killebrew scored the game-winning run off of Ashley Cangiano's two-out RBI single to right center for a six-run advantage, 7-1. Stonehill retired the side throwing out Maleena Davis at third base.

With the bases loaded, Brochu hit a hard grounder that pushed across Alexandra Hammond, trimming the deficit to five, 7-2. With two outs on the board, Theilgard blasted her first-career grand slam over the left field fence that ended Amelia Mamone's outing in the circle. Samantha Sylvester retired Hartman for the final out holding on for the 7-6 final.
