Softball Splits Doubleheader With Saint Michael’s

Theilgard swings 4-for-7, with a team-high 4 RBI, homerun, double

EASTON, Massachusetts (April 14, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team (3-13, 2-10 NE10) fell to Saint Michael's College (4-6, 4-6 NE10) in game one, 13-11, in eight innings, and then bounced back in game two with a 9-4 victory in 6 innings in a game called due to darkness on Fr. Gartland Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Game 1: Stonehill 11 – Saint Michael's 13 (8 innings)

Key Moments:
In a very offensive game, Stonehill scored runs in every inning except for the third and eighth, while Saint Michael's scored a run in every inning except for the fifth and seventh, as the Skyhawks edged the Purple Knights in hits, 12-11.

Stonehill broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to take the lead back, 8-6. With her third homerun of the season, 13th of her career Theilgard launched a two-run blast over the left field fence. With runners on first and second and two outs, Azzato found a gap in right center field, driving in Marissa Dwyer and Hartman for the Skyhawks' second lead of the game.


Mayette earned her third win of her career, striking out six in the two games

The Purple Knights put up five runs in the top of the sixth on a three-run homerun from Sadie Pratt and then a two-run shot from Haley Waghorn, both to left field, for a two-run advantage, 11-9. Stonehill's Brochu drove the ball out to right field, scoring Azzato from second for a one-run deficit, 11-10, in the bottom of the frame.

Kelly Mayette retired three-straight batters in the top of the seventh and the Skyhawks' Julia Perrone ripped the ball down the left field line with a runner on second to tie the game 11-11.  In the top of the eighth, Hannah Arruda connected for the Purple Knights' fourth homerun of the day, tallying two RBI for a 13-11 lead. The Purple Knights closed out the game with three-straight outs, holding on for the win.

Key Moments:

In a back and forth battle, Stonehill once again out-hit Saint Michael's 12-7, as the Purple Knights put up the first runs of the game with their fifth homerun of the day, this time a two-run shot from Grace Trautman, 2-0. Stonehill earned those runs back with Hartman's second homerun of the season, 2-1, followed by a two-out RBI single from Weis, driving in Mayette to tie the score, 2-2.

On three hits, Saint Michael's put up two more runs in the top of the third as Johns found a hole in right center, scoring Trautman from third, 3-2. With the bases loaded for the third time in the inning, Weghorn was walked, extending their lead, 4-2. Once again Stonehill answered and with one out, and runners on first and second, Brochu sent a hard ground ball to right field advancing to second on an error, and scoring both runners to tie the game, 4-4.

As darkness came upon us, Stonehill recorded five hits in the bottom of the fifth, giving them their biggest lead of the day of five runs, 9-4. With the bases loaded and one out, Dwyer singled bringing home the first run, 5-4, while the Purple Knights stopped a run on a fielder's choice. Brochu and Ricker both singled, while Theilgard doubled to right center adding to the Skyhawks' lead. The Purple Knights weren't given a chance in the top of the sixth, as Mayette once again got out of the inning, retiring each batter.

Stonehill will host Saint Michael's College for the final two games of the series, tomorrow, Thursday, April 15  on Fr. Gartland Field in NE10 play with a first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
