Softball Falls Twice to No. 19 Saint Anselm in Regular Season Finale

Bennett went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (May 1, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team (5-23, 4-20 NE10) fell to No. 19 Saint Anselm College (24-4, 22-4 NE10) twice Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play with scores of 10-0 in five innings and 4-1.  

Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Saint Anselm 10 (5 innings)

Saint Anselm broke open the game in the bottom of the first, as the Hawks scored seven runs on five hits and an error, 7-0. Stonehill put on a runner in each of the first three innings, but Saint Anselm kept the Skyhawks from scoring.

The Skyhawks got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second, as the Hawks put another run across in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Washburn to go up eight runs, 8-0. Fitzpatrick then connected for her second hit of the day doubling through the left side driving in two more runs, 10-0, as the Hawks held on for the win.

Key Moments:

Brochu started the Skyhawks off with a double to center field and Theilgard reached on an error to put two runners on, but the Hawks' got out of the jam, as Courtney Fisher struck out the remaining two batters. In the bottom of the first, Saint Anselm scored on a bases loaded walk and then with two outs, Abbie Murrell drove home another run for a 2-0 advantage.

Bailey Cain doubled to right center in the bottom of the third with two outs for the Hawks' third run of the game, 3-0. Saint Anselm put up another run on two outs in the bottom of the fourth as Washburn singled and tried to stretch it into a double but was called out after a run scored for a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Stonehill saw Bennett and Brochu single to lead off the inning, and Ricker reached on an error as Bennett advanced home to cut the deficit to three, 4-1. The Skyhawks were unable to continue the offensive attack, as the Hawks allowed just one hit in the top of the seventh.
