Assumption Gets Past Softball Twice in Doubleheader

WORCESTER, Massachusetts (April 10, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team (2-10, 1-7 NE10) fell twice to Assumption University (6-4, 6-4 NE10) Saturday afternoon at Marois Field with scores of 6-3 and 11-1 in five innings.

Game 1: Stonehill 3 – Assumption 6

The Greyhounds put up five of their six runs in the first three innings of the game, as the Skyhawks weren't able to put up runs until late in the game. Assumption's Alyssa Bialakis connected for a two-run single to left field, scoring Brooke Murphy and Jordan Dwyer, 2-0 in the bottom of the first. In the next inning, Abigail Larson launched a two-run homerun extending the Greyhounds lead to four, 4-0. Their fifth run came in the bottom of the third as McKenzie Richards singled to right field scoring Beaton, 5-0.

After stranding six total runners on base, Stonehill finally connected with a two-out RBI single from Adamo, bringing home Theilgard, cutting the deficit to four, 5-1, in the top of the sixth. The Greyhounds quickly responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring on an error, 6-1.

Gianna Azzato scored the Skyhawks second run of the game in the top of the seventh off Dwyer's RBI single to left field, 6-2. With the bases loaded and one out, Stonehill scored their third run on an error, cutting the deficit to three, 6-3, but Assumption retired the side with a fly out and a line out for the win.

Following a scoreless first inning, Assumption put two tallies on the board for a 2-0 lead on Lauren Geramia's double to left field. The Greyhounds broke open the game with seven runs in the third inning, 9-0, including four of them coming with no outs, as they recorded six of their 10 hits in the game in the frame.

Stonehill put up their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth with one out and runners on first and third. Genna Hartman's fielder's choice to shortstop gave Ricker enough time to score from third, cutting the deficit to eight, 9-1. Assumption scored two more in the bottom of the fourth, 11-1, before the Greyhounds retired the Skyhawks in the top of the fifth to hold on for the win.
