Volleyball Continues Conference Play, Drops Neutral Site Match to Le Moyne

LORETTA, Pa. (October 20, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team fell in three sets, 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 23-25), Friday night to Le Moyne College at DeGol Arena as Saint Francis (Pa.) hosted the two Northeast Conference opponents in a neutral site match.

Skyhawk Summary

Freshman Lauren MacKellar (Northville, Mich./Northville) led the Skyhawks with nine kills in the match on an impressive .467 kill percentage. Sophomore Mia Berardino (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional) had five kills, five digs, one block assist, one solo block, and one service ace. Junior Emma Graves (Berkshire, N.Y./Newark Valley) tallied four kills along with three block assists. Freshman Abby Farrell (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) tallied five kills and recorded a team-high four block assists. Senior Kristen DeLorenzo (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) notched a team-high ten digs to go along with five assists and a service ace Freshman Maddie Schamaun (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) led the Skyhawks with 16 assists and had three digs. Senior Lauren McCloskey (Salem, N.H./Salem) recorded four kills, one solo block, one block assist, and a dig. Senior Skylar Hanley (Griswold, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) notched a season-high two kills during the Skyhawks' comeback efforts in the final set.

How it Happened

SET 1 | Through the first 16 points, there were eight different ties as Stonehill and Le Moyne were tied 8-8. The Dolphins took a slight advantage after a 5-2 run that put them ahead 13-10. The Skyhawks tied it at 13-13 after kills from McCloskey and MacKellar but Le Moyne responded with four straight points (17-13). The Dolphins grew their lead to six points (22-16) and overcame a 6-2 run from the Skyhawks that made the score 24-22 but the final point went to Le Moyne to give them the first set.

SET 2 | The Skyhawks led early (3-1) eventually pulling ahead by four points (8-4) and then seven points (13-6) after three kills from MacKellar and two from Berardino. Four straight points from Le Moyne brought them within three (13-10). The Dolphins were down just two points (15-13) before three straight attack errors boosted the Stonehill lead back up to five points (18-13). The Skyhawks were ahead 20-15 but Le Moyne outscored Stonehill 10-3 to win the second set 25-23.

SET 3 | The third set started similarly to the first, as the teams found themselves tied 8-8 with seven different ties. Three straight points from the Dolphins gave them a three-point lead which they eventually doubled later in the set (19-13). Le Moyne held their six-point advantage late (23-17), but Stonehill rattled off five consecutive scores after a pair of kills from Hanley and one from Farrell (24-23). The Dolphins won the match with a kill for the final point as Le Moyne won their first match of the season.
