Volleyball Falls in Non-Conference Match in Five Sets Against Southern New Hampshire

EASTON, Mass. (October 11, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team fell in five sets in a non-conference matchup against Southern New Hampshire University at Merkert Gymnasium Wednesday night, 3-2 (25-20, 14-25, 25-23, 19-25, 5-15).

Skyhawk Summary

Freshman Georgia Murphy (Plano, Texas/John Paul II) led the Skyhawks with eleven kills and had two block assists for Stonehill. Junior Emma Graves (Berkshire, N.Y./Newark Valley) tied Murphy with a team-high 12 points, recording 10 kills and four block assists. Freshman Lauren MacKellar (Northville, Mich./Northville) had a team-high 50.0% kill percentage with six kills and had an assist and two block assists. Senior Lauren McCloskey (Salem, N.H./Salem) paced the Skyhawks with six block assists, also notching five kills and two service aces. Senior Kristen DeLorenzo (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) led Stonehill with 17 digs and had one assist. Freshman Amaya Parnell (Pepperell, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) tallied a team-high 11 assists while recording two digs and a kill.

How it Happened

SET 1 | SNHU jumped out to an early lead in the match after scoring three straight, giving them a 6-3 advantage. Stonehill got their offense rolling as they took a 9-8 lead and eventually a 4-0 run capped off their run as they led 15-11. Southern New Hampshire tied the score at 18-18 but the Skyhawks scored the next five (23-18) and five of the next seven points to win the opening set 25-20.

SET 2 | The Penmen had another early lead, using a 4-1 run to propel them to a 13-8 lead. After a kill from Murphy, SNHU put together eight consecutive scores as they went ahead by a match-high 12 points (21-9). The Penmen would win the second set 25-14 to tie the match at 1-1.

SET 3 | Stonehill led 6-2 to begin the third set but SNHU caught back up, tying the Skyhawks at 10 points each. There were nine ties in the third set as the lead swayed back and forth until four straight points from Stonehill put them at match point as they led 24-21. The Skyhawks closed out the set, winning 25-23 to take a 2-1 match lead.

SET 4 | SNHU took a 5-1 lead early in the fourth set and Stonehill responded by cutting their lead in half as the Penmen led 9-7. Southern New Hampshire added to their lead as they built a seven-point advantage, leading 17-10. SNHU held that seven-point lead into the late stages of the set as they led 22-15, eventually tying the match 2-2 with a 25-19 set victory.

SET 5 | The Penmen scored the first four points of the deciding set and doubled their lead to eight points as they led 10-2. Stonehill couldn't string together any consecutive scores as they fell in the final set 15-5.
