Volleyball Falls in Three Sets on Day One of the Harvard Invitational to the Host Crimson

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (September 1, 2023) - The Stonehill College women's volleyball team competed on the opening day of the Harvard Invitational, taking on the Crimson at the Malkin Athletic Center a non-conference matchup Friday night, falling in three sets, 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 20-25).

Stonehill senior Kristen DeLorenzo led the Skyhawks with 11 digs while assisting on one point, and notching a service ace. Sophomore Delaney Mihelich paced the team, tallying 13 assists as well as two digs. Freshman Amaya Parnell was second on the team in the assist category, posting six while contributing one kill, one service ace, and two digs. Freshman Lauren MacKellar was excellent on the offensive end, leading Stonehill with 10 kills on a team-high 35.3% hit percentage.

SET 1 | After the Skyhawks and Crimson split the first ten points (5-5), Harvard would score the next five points, catapulting them to a 15-4 run (20-9). The Crimson would close out the first set with five of the following seven points, ending the first set with a 52.9% hit percentage and four service aces.

SET 2 | Harvard got out to an early lead in the second set, jumping ahead of Stonehill by five points (7-2). The Skyhawks would respond with four straight points (7-6) on two attack errors from Harvard, an ace from Parnell, and a kill from MacKellar. Stonehill would take the lead, going ahead 10-8 before the two teams stayed neck-and-neck, remaining even at 13-13. The Crimson scored the next five points (18-13), vaulting them to an insurmountable lead in the set, winning it 25-17.

SET 3 | The Skyhawks and MacKellar started the third set strong with the freshman tallying three kills to boost Stonehill to a three-point lead (4-1). The Crimson claimed the lead with five of the next six points (7-6), eventually growing their advantage to five (15-10). The Skyhawks managed to pull within four points but never any closer as Harvard closed out the third set, and the match, 25-20.

The Skyhawks will conclude the Harvard Invitational Saturday afternoon with two matches from Cambridge, one against Holy Cross at 10 a.m. and the final match against New Hampshire at 4 p.m.
