Booth nets three goals, Herr posts ten saves for first career win
SHIRLEY, N.Y. (April 16, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked 20th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association Division II poll, notched its first win over a ranked opponent this season with a 10-8 triumph over 12th-ranked Dowling College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Golden Lions Field this afternoon.
Junior Shannon Booth (Pearl River, New York/Nanuet) matched her career high with a season-best three goals to lead Stonehill to victory, while classmate Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) added two goals, two ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover. Senior Caitlin Sweeney (Hollis, New Hampshire/Hollis-Brookline) contributed a goal and assist for the Skyhawks, with a caused turnover, while sophomore All-American Kelley Healey (Westwood, Massachusetts/Westwood) chipped in with a goal, three ground balls and three draws.
Sophomore Bailey Herr (Oakhurst, New Jersey/Ocean Township) earned her first career win in goal for Stonehill with a career-high ten saves. Junior Michaela Brown (Pleasantville, New York/The Ursuline School) spearheaded the defensive effort in front of Herr with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Dowling held a 27-25 edge in shots for the contest and won the draws by an 11-8 margin. The Skyhawks converted 4-of-12 free-position shots and was successful on 13-of-16 clear attempts. Junior Lauren Young (Centereach, New York/Centereach) finished with eight saves in goal for the Golden Lions.
Junior Katie Meinecke (Manorville, New York/Eastport South Manor) led Dowling with a game-high four points on two goals and two assists, while adding a draw control and caused turnover. Junior Brooke Kreuscher (Bayport, New York/Bayport-Blue Point) netted three goals with two caused turnovers, while classmate Karie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, New York/Comsewogue) added two goals.
Stonehill used a 5-1 scoring run to turn a 6-5 deficit less than four minutes into the second half into a 10-7 lead following junior Kiki Ryan's (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme) sixth goal of the season with 5:39 to play. Meinecke followed with her second goal of the day and 30th of the season on a free-position shot with 4:41 remaining, but Herr made two saves down the stretch to seal the win. Booth scored two of her three goals during the deciding stretch for the Skyhawks, including a go-ahead marker with 19:19 to play after sophomore Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) knotted the score just 29-seconds after Meinecke's first goal of the half that gave Dowling its last lead of the contest.

Kreuscher knotted the score at 7-7 with 13:11 remaining, but Healey put Stonehill back in front with 8:58 on the clock and then Booth's tenth of the season gave the Skyhawks a two goal margin, assisted by Sweeney, with 6:49 to play.
Booth opened the scoring with a free-position goal 1:55 into the contest, but Kreuscher leveled with 16:50 left in the first half on a free-position tally of her own. Vetter nosed the Skyhawks back in front with 13:23 to play in the half, but Dowling netted the next two within a 30-second span to take its first lead on a Znaniecki marker with 12:05 left. Sweeney and senior Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading Memorial) countered with back to back goals to put Stonehill back in front with 6:45 to go in the half, but Znaniecki forced a 4-4 halftime draw with her second marker of the half with 3:41 remaining.
Vetter opened the second half scoring just 56-seconds in with her second goal of the day, but Dowling scored twice in a 29-second span to reclaim the lead (6-5) after a goal by senior Emma Ferreira (Sayville, New York/Sayville) with 26:46 to go before Stonehill took control.
Stonehill (6-6, 4-5 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Southern New Hampshire University for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. Dowling (11-2, 5-0 ECC) hosts Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
