Monnat and Sanna combine for seven points to keep Dolphins unbeaten

EASTON, Mass. (April 2, 2016) – Le Moyne College, ranked No. 2 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, outscored 14th-ranked Stonehill 5-1 over the final 18-minutes of the first half on its way to a 10-6 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium afternoon.

Senior Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, New York/C.W. Baker) paced Le Moyne with a goal and three assists for four points, while freshman Monica Sanna (Pittsford, New York/Pittsford) added three points with two goals and an assist, chipping in two ground balls and a draw control. Senior Erica Geremia (Camillus, New York/West Genesee), sophomore Abbie McEntee (Cazenovia, New York/Cazenovia) and freshman Bryanna Fazio (Watertown, New York/General Brown) each contributed a pair of goals for the Dolphins, while Fazio also collected three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jacqueline Pardee (Camillus, New York/West Genesee) chipped in with a goal and assist.

Senior Ryan Cortese (Brewerton, New York/Paul V. Moore) made three saves in the Le Moyne goal as the Dolphins finished with a 21-14 advantage for shots, including 13-6 in the first half to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Stonehill controlled possession with an 11-7 edge in draw controls, but was just 8-for-13 on clear attempts, compared to 10-for-12 for Le Moyne, turning the ball over 17 times compared to 13 for the Dolphins. Freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Guilderland, New York/Guilderland) made five saves in the Stonehill goal with a caused turnover.

Seniors Caitlin Sweeney (Hollis, New Hampshire/Hollis-Brookline) and Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading Memorial) each added a goal and assist for the Skyhawks, with Matheson also collecting a draw, while junior Shannon Booth (Pearl River, New York/Nanuet) and sophomore Brianna Doherty (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) chipped in with a goal apiece.

Stonehill struck first on its way to posting a 2-1 advantage in the opening ten minutes of the game as Vetter scored off a feed from Sweeney 4:13 into the contest. Fazio leveled for Le Moyne, assisted by Monnat with 21:33 to play in the half, but Stonehill quickly responded to regain the lead (2-1) on Vetter's second marker on a free-position shot 58-seconds later.

Le Moyne gained control of the game by outscoring Stonehill 5-1 over the remainder of the half to take a three goal lead into halftime (6-3). Geremia potted two straight goals at 18:09 and 11:11, the latter of which was assisted by Monnat. After Doherty answered for Stonehill with her third goal of the season with 9:21 remaining that knotted the score at 3-3, Monnat pushed the Dolphins back in front with a free-position goal 2:08 later. Fazio fired in her 22nd goal of the season with 4:41 remaining and then McEntee capped the first half scoring, assisted by Pardee, with 33-seconds left.

Matheson pulled Stonehill back within a pair (6-4) with an unassisted tally 8:37 into the second half, but the Skyhawks wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way. Sanna restored Le Moyne's three goal cushion 2:02 later with a free-position goal and then after Booth scored a free-position marker with 17:22 on the clock, the Dolphins sealed the win with two straight goals from Sanna and Pardee for a four goal lead (9-5) with 10:38 to play. Sweeney scored her eighth of the year to pull the Skyhawks within three with 10:03 left, but McEntee capped the scoring with 4:26 left, assisted by Sanna, to cap the scoring and the four goal win for the Dolphins.

Stonehill (3-4, 2-3 NE-10) is right back in action at W.B. Mason Stadium on Tuesday night when it hosts Assumption College for a Northeast-10 matchup at 7 p.m. Le Moyne (8-0, 5-0 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
