#16 Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away against Assumption, 13-10

Vetter nets season-high five goals, Ryan nets four points to lead Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (April 5, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked 16th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, used a seven goal run in the second half to pull away and secure a 13-10 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this evening.

Junior Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) scored a season-high five goals, while classmate Kiki Ryan (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme) totaled a career-high matching four points to lead Stonehill to victory. Vetter also contributed five draw controls and a ground ball, while Ryan registered two goals and two assists. Senior Caitlin Sweeney (Hollis, New Hampshire/Hollis-Brookline) added two goals and an assist for three points with two ground balls, while junior Shannon Booth (Pearl River, New York/Nanuet) netted a pair of goals. Senior Rebecca Matheson (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading Memorial) chipped in a goal and assist for the Skyhawks.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Hess (Guilderland, New York/Guilderland) preserved the win in goal for Stonehill with six saves, adding two ground balls and two caused turnovers over the final 42:29 off the bench in which she yielded just five goals. She replaced classmate Bailey Herr (Oakhurst, New Jersey/Ocean Township) who started in her collegiate debut and made two saves over the opening 17:31. Stonehill finished with a 23-20 edge in shots, converting 6-of-9 free-position attempts compared to 1-for-4 for Assumption. The Skyhawks also posted a 15-10 advantage on draw controls and was successful on 10-of-13 clear attempts.

Senior Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Connecticut/Guilford) led Assumption with five points on three goals and two assists with three ground balls and two draw controls. Freshman Kailyn Hart (Cohoes, New York/Shaker) added two goals and two assists, while sophomore Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Massachusetts/Ashland) netted three goals with four ground balls. Junior Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) finished with five saves in the Greyhounds goal, with two ground balls.

Stonehill rallied to lead by a goal at halftime (6-5) after trailing by three (4-1) less than ten minutes into the contest. Graves scored the first two goals of the second half to put Assumption back in front (7-6) with 22:17 remaining. She knotted the score 1:11 into the half off a pass from Molloy and then gave the Greyhounds the lead with her 13th goal of the year less than eight minutes in.

Stonehill responded with the next seven goals to take control of the game, including two goals each by Vetter and Ryan. Booth answered Graves' second marker to open the second half just a minute later with a free-position goal with 21:09 to play to knot the score (7-7). Sweeney put the Skyhawks in front for good with a free-position tally with 16:39 remaining and then Vetter added her fourth goal of the afternoon 2:02 after that to give Stonehill its first two goal lead of the day.

Stonehill broke the game open with four goals within a six minute span in the final ten minutes of the contest. Sophomore All-American Kelly Healey (Westwood, Massachusetts/Westwood) started the run, assisted by Matheson, with 9:04 on the clock before two straight markers from Ryan extended the Skyhawks lead to five goals (12-7) with 5:35 remaining. Vetter capped the Stonehill scoring with her team-leading 15th goal of the season with 3:42 left, before Assumption rallied with three scores in the closing 2:56 to slice the gap in half, keyed by a goal and assist by Molloy.

Vetter opened the scoring on the afternoon 1:50 into the contest, but Assumption reeled off four straight to open a three goal lead (4-1) after a Molloy goal 9:18 into the first half. Hart sparked the Greyhounds run with a goal and two assists, setting up the Molloy marker. Vetter potted two straight within a two and a half minute span to pull Stonehill back within a goal (4-3) with 17:36 left. Molloy answered with her second goal of the half with 14:48 on the clock, but the Skyhawks scored the final three goals of the half, all on free-position attempts, to take the lead into halftime, capped by Matheson's tenth of the year with 2:09 left.

Stonehill (4-4, 3-3 NE-10) returns to W.B. Mason Stadium on Thursday night when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University for a Northeast-10 matchup at 7 p.m. Assumption (3-6, 1-5 NE-10) hosts 18th-ranked Bentley University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
