Stonehill Captures Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational

Skyhawks boast nine event winners to nearly double up the field

WALTHAM, Mass. (December 11, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's track and field team won its first event of the season with a first place finish at the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University, at Gosman Athletic Center on Saturday.

Stonehill won the event by 91 points over rival Bentley University by accumulating 180 points for the meet. Bentley finished with 89 points, followed by third place and host Brandeis with 83. The University of Massachusetts Lowell was fourth with 77.

Stonehill's dominance was on display in the 800-meter run as the Skyhawks took the top three spots and five of the top six overall, led by junior All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) in first place with a time of 1:57.21. He was followed closely by freshman Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) in second place in 1:57.28 and junior Samuel Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) in third at 1:57.88. Sophomore Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) took fifth in 2:02.91, while freshman Alexander Lustig (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose) finished sixth in 2:03.91.

Stonehill also took the top two spots and three of the top four overall in the 1000-meter run, led by sophomore Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) in first place with a time of 2:31.08. Freshman Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's) placed second in 2:31.47, while sophomore Christopher Dooley (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) took third in 2:35.27.

Stonehill also won the 4x800-meter relay behind the efforts of a mix of those two groups. The team won the event by over seven seconds with its time of 8:00.42 with Blaszczyk running the lead, followed by Spencer and Dooley, with Hanlon on the anchor leg. The Skyhawks "B" team was second in 8:07.70, nearly 13 seconds ahead of third place Bentley. Zawalich, Lustig, Cooney and freshman Nicholas Capezzuto (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) competed on that team for Stonehill.

Sophomore Xavier Harris-Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) won the 55-meter hurdles event by over half a second with his time of 7.90-seconds in the final, qualifying for the New England Championships in February in the process. He qualified first for the final in 8.12-seconds.

Freshman Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) was victorious in his first collegiate meet with a first place finish in the 200-meter dash. He topped the field of 36 competitors with his time of 23.10 seconds. Junior Ariel Francisco (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) was sixth with a time of 23.40-seconds, while Harris-Dixon took 12th in 23.58.

Grubel also qualified for the 55-meter dash final with his qualifying time of 6.82-seconds, before finishing fifth in the final in 6.76. Sophomore Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) placed fourth in the final with a time of 6.74-seconds after qualifying fifth (in the field of 27 sprinters) in 6.83.

Freshman Nicholas Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) won for the second-straight week in the high jump as he cleared 6-feet, 8.00-inches.

Junior Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) and sophomore Ryan Perkins (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's) took the top two spots in the pole vault. Both Skyhawk vaulters cleared 13-feet, 7.25-inches, but Byrnes did so on his first attempt to take first place, while Perkins needed an extra attempt to finish second.

Freshman Ian Parsons (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) won the shot put in his collegiate debut with a throw of 44-feet, 9.75-inches. Classmate Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) placed fourth with a distance of 42-11.00.

Senior Daniel Kincade (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and sophomore Thomas Yates (Baldwin, Maine/Cheverus) placed second and third, respectively, to lead three point winners for Stonehill in the weight throw. Kincade cleared a distance of 50-feet, 2.00-inches, while Yates followed with a throw of 46-05.50. Cormier took fifth with a distance of 39-08.00.

Stonehill finished third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:35.92. Running for the Skyhawks were junior Colin Prior (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) in the lead, followed by Francisco and sophomore Herby Saintil (Roslindale, Mass./BC High), with junior Daniel Padilla (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) running the anchor leg.

Other Stonehill highlights include:

Freshman Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial) and sophomore George Georgaklis (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) both earned points for Stonehill in the long jump. Smith placed fourth in the field of 15 with a distance of 19-feet, 10.75-inches, while Georgaklis leaped 19-6.25 to place sixth.

Smith and Saintil also earned points in the triple jump for the Skyhawks with Saintil taking second with a distance of 42-feet, 1.25-inches. Smith was third with a distance of 40-feet, 10.50-inches.

Padilla finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.03-seconds.

Junior Timothy Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) placed sixth in the mile run with his time of 4:37.57.

Freshman Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) led four Skyhawks in the 5000-meter run with his sixth place finish in 15:47.80. Sophomore Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished ninth in 16:01.26, while freshman Seamus McEvoy (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) rounded out the top ten in 16:07.57.

Freshman Michael Gendron (Lowell, Mass./Lowell), sophomore Nathaniel Webber (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) and freshman Zachary Bagan (Syracuse, N.Y./East Longmeadow) finished in seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Gendron finished in 9:01.44, while Webber posted a time of 9:05.30 and Bagan finished with a time of 9:08.82.

Stonehill is off until it opens the second semester with a tri-meet at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, January 21, at 11 a.m.
