Skyhawks win home meet for fourth-straight year behind seven event winners

EASTON, Mass. (April 14, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men's Division II East Regional rankings index, won its Skyhawks Invitational for the fourth straight year at W.B. Mason Stadium today.

Stonehill won its fifth annual home event with 216 points to outpace second place Tufts University who finished with 131.50 points. Bridgewater State University was third with 109 points, while Boston College finished fourth with 87 and Boston University rounded out the top five with 67.50 points. The Skyhawks won seven events on the day, saw two NCAA provisional qualifying efforts, and had ?? others take second place for their event.

Junior All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) posted a pair of event wins with NCAA Provisional qualifying performances. He capped the event by breaking his own W.B. Mason Stadium record with a leap of 6-feet, 11-inches in a jump off with freshman teammate Nicholas Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High). The winning jump provisionally qualifies Thomas for the NCAA Division II Championships in Pueblo, Colo., next month and is tied for the sixth highest height cleared in Division II this season to date. He also broke his own facility record of 6-10.25 set on April 29, 2011. Staley bettered his NCAA provisional qualifying height by clearing 6-10.75 to place second and post the eighth-highest jump in Division II this season.

Thomas and sophomore Xavier Harris-Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) swept the top two spots in the 110-meter high hurdles. Thomas provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event for the third-straight year with his time of 14.36-seconds – the 13th fastest time in Division II to date. Harris-Dixon was second in 14.97-seconds.

Freshman Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) was a part of two event wins and three top two finishes overall for Stonehill. He won the 100-meter dash in 10.89-seconds, leading a field of 29 sprinters in the event. Sophomore Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) finished 11th in 11.42-seconds.

Grubel and Harris also ran legs with Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay team raced to a first place finish with its time of 42.61-seconds. Also running the event for the Skyhawks were, junior Colin Prior (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) and senior John Driscoll (Revere, Mass./Revere).

Grubel also posted a second place finish (out of 43 sprinters) in the 200-meter dash with his time of 22.22-seconds. Prior was 14th in 23.22-seconds, while Harris posted a time of 23.53-seconds to finish third in his section. 

Driscoll also finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 57.74-seconds.

Junior All-American Corey Thomas won the high jump and 110-meter hurdles.

Senior Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial), a two-time Northeast-10 Conference 10,000-meter champion won the event by nearly 30-seconds as he smashed the W.B. Mason Stadium record with his time of 31:28.53. He broke the previous facility record of 31:39.54 set by David Emerson of Boston College on April 5, 2008.

Polito led a pack of five Stonehill runners in the top six positions as classmate Corey Donahoe (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) placed third in 32:33.90 and sophomore Michael Amirault (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) took fourth in 32:41.84. Sophomore Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) rounded out the top five in 32:45.94, while freshman Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) finished sixth in 32:58.26.

Junior John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) won the javelin throw with a distance of 186-feet, 8-inches. Sophomore Taylor Viotto (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) finished third with a throw of 166-01.

Junior Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) won the 3000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:36.67.

Stonehill's 4x800-meter relay team placed first with a time of 7:59.79. Running for the Skyhawks were junior All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep), sophomore Christopher Dooley (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), sophomore All-American Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) and freshman All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).

Cooney was just edged out in the 800-meter run as his time of 1:56.54 was just short of Boston College junior Louis Serafini, who won the event in 1:56.40. Dooley finished fifth in 1:58.51.

Sophomore Herby Saintil (Roslindale, Mass./BC High) took second in the triple jump, but broke the school record with his distance of 45-feet, 5.25-seconds. He broke the previous school record of 44-07.75 set by Tyler Guilmette at UMass Lowell on April 15, 2006.

Junior Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.J./Chaminade) placed second in the pole vault, but set a school record by clearing 15-feet, 3-inches, matching the winning height, but needing more attempts to clear. He broke the previous school record of 14-03.25 set by junior teammate Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) at the UMass Minuteman Invitational on April 16, 2011. McCann took third place today by matching his previous school record height on Saturday.

Junior Tim Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) led three Stonehill runners in the top five in the 1500-meter run with his second place finish in 3:59.47, narrowly edging Hanlon  in third at 3:59.96. Blaszczyk placed fifth in 4:01.89.

Other Stonehill highlights include:

Sophomore Scott Waller (Andover, Mass./Andover) led seven Skyhawks in the 5000-meter run with his second place finish (out of 36) in 15:17.49. Sophomore Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) finished eighth in 15:24.43, while classmate Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) was 12th in 15:32.36.

Senior Dan Kincade (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) finished fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 156-feet, 9-inches. Sophomore Thomas Yates (Baldwin, Maine/Cheverus) placed eighth with his throw of 132-11. Kincade was also tenth for discus in 106-feet, 9-inches.

Stonehill swept fifth through eighth place in the long jump. Colin Prior led the pack with a distance of 21-feet, 9-inches to place fifth overall. Sophomore George Georgaklis (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) finished sixth at 20-20.75, while freshman Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial) took seventh in 20-07.75. Georgaklis also finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 43-feet, 1.5-inches.

Freshman Ian Parsons (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 46-1.5-inches.

Stonehill returns to action next weekend when it splits between the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University, on Friday and Saturday as well as the Holy Cross Crusades on Saturday.
