Stonehill Men Earn Fourth Place Finish At DII Challenge

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 14, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, receiving votes in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II preseason poll, and ranked second in the East Region, scored 104 points, good for fourth place, at the DII challenge earlier today.

Senior captain Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) was the top finisher for Stonehill, as he came in 14th after completing the eight kilometer course in 26:09.2. He was followed by classmate Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who finished 17th with a time of 26:17.1, and junior Dan Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's), who completed the course in 26:22.5, good for 19th place.

Sophomore Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) was the next Skyhawk to cross the finish line, coming in 25th with a time of 26:30, followed by senior Scott Waller (Andover, Mass./Andover), who placed 30th with a 26:39.6 mark. Junior captain Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) finished 35th, checking in with a time of 26:48.0.

Sophomore Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), who placed 12th at last week's Shacklette Invitational, topped his time from a week ago with a 27:07.3 mark. Massey was followed by senior captain Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Geurtin), who finished in 27:09.2, and freshman Daniel Nolan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), who was the ninth Skyhawk to finish the race, earning a 27:14.1 time.

Stonehill narrowly missed finishing third as a team, as the Skyhawks were only three points behind third-place Shippensburg. Lock Haven took the team crown with 53 points, followed by Dickinson with 66 points.

Rounding out the Skyhawks who competed today were senior Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown), with a time of 27:19.6, freshman Tyler Henseler (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken), with a time of 27:24.7, junior Seamus McEvoy (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), who completed the course in 27.29.0, junior Michael Gendron (Lowell, Mass./Lowell), who finished in 27:33.9, senior Nate Webber (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic), with a time of 27:39.2, and freshman Elijah Curme (Weston, Mass./Weston), who checked in at 27:56.7.

Stonehill was originally scheduled to participate in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational next weekend, but will no longer be attending. The Skyhawks will return to action on September 28th at the 33rd Annual Codfish Bowl, held at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Mass.
