Plantsville, Conn. native helped lead Stonehill to NE-10 and East Region titles in 2013
EASTON, Mass. (February 20, 2013) – Stonehill College junior Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) from the men's cross country program has been named a Fall 2013 Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award recipient, it was announced today by the league office.
Wilcox, who gives the men's cross country program three Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence winners since the award started in 2009, is one of three Stonehill representatives among the seven total student-athletes honored by the Northeast-10 for the fall 2013 semester. Senior Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry), a two-time second team All-American from the field hockey team, and classmate James Lanier (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley), a cornerback from Stonehill's 2013 NE-10 regular season co-champion football team, were also recognized by the conference for their efforts in the classroom and on the field of play. The trio gives Stonehill 15 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence winners in the five years of its existence. Wilcox joins Stephen Polito, '12, who received back to back awards as the two Sport Excellence winners from the men's cross country program.
Wilcox was a key member of Stonehill's successful 2013 cross country season that included the program's third straight Northeast-10 Championship, first East Region title since 2007, and 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships. Individually, Wilcox was one of two student-athletes on the team to register both All-Conference and All-Region honors.
At the Northeast-10 Championship on October 27th, Wilcox placed 14th in 26:03, to earn All-Conference second team honors for the second consecutive season. Two weeks later at the East Region Championship, he posted his first career All-Region performance by placing 11th out of 185 participants in 32:19.6. Wilcox wrapped up his junior season by competing at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year, where he finished 176th.

In the classroom, Wilcox has earned a 3.65 cumulative grade point average as an accounting major at Stonehill, while being named to a combined nine NE-10 and Athletic Director's honor rolls. Wilcox has made three appearances on the NE-10 Academic All-Conference team, the past two falls for cross country and last spring as a member of the track and field team. He was also recently honored by the USTFCCCA with an All-Academic award.
The Northeast-10's Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence program recognizes student-athletes that have excelled both on the field and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least two consecutive semesters of enrollment at their current institution, two total years of athletic eligibility, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 3.30. The award is voted on by a pool of administrators (senior woman administrators/sports information directors/faculty athletic representatives) from Northeast-10 institutions.
With 20 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. The Skyhawks have finished in the top three in the final NE-10 Presidents' Cup standings nine straight years, winning the Cup four times, including a streak of three-straight from 2009-10 through 2011-12. This prestigious award is given to the top performing athletic school in the Northeast-10, across all sports and seasons. Stonehill has received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first two years if the program's existence of honoring programs with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. The Skyhawks have earned a 97% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for fifth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with ten Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. In addition, the Skyhawks are ranked sixth in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs.
