Nickerson leads three double-winners for Skyhawks in season finale

EASTON, Mass. (April 23, 2022) – Stonehill College closed out its 2021-22 season with a 4-3 victory over Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Junior Luke Nickerson led three double-winners for Stonehill on the afternoon, including delivering the match-clinching point at No. 4 singles.
  • Senior Juan Camilo Riano Rojas was a double-winner for Stonehill in his final collegiate match, with wins at No. 3 doubles with Nickerson and No. 5 singles.
  • Junior Ben Simmons rounded out the double-winners for the Skyhawks.
  • Seniors Max Francis and Ethan Hall as well as junior Brady Ryan all notched singles wins for Assumption.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill swept the three doubles matches to earn its first point of the afternoon, with Nickerson and Riano Rojas breezing to a 6-1 decision at No. 3.
  • Simmons didn't drop a game in posting a straight sets win at No. 6 singles against Assumption sophomore Lucas Caira.
  • Riano Rojas pulled Stonehill within a point of the match win with his 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 5 singles over Assumption senior Kevin Wicks.
  • Nickerson produced the match deciding point for Stonehill with his 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against senior Michael Butkus.

    Hall battled back from a set down at No. 3 singles to earn as point for Assumption at No. 3 singles against Stonehill sophomore Louis Coppi. Coppi won the first set 6-1, before Hall rallied for the second set 7-5 to force a super tiebreaker that he won 10-5 to clinch the win.

Up Next

Stonehill wraps up its final season at the NCAA Division II level and the NE10 with a 7-8 record overall, including 1-6 in Conference play, before starting a transition to NCAA Division I as a member of the Northeast Conference starting July 1. Assumption closes its season at 2-10 overall and 0-7 in the NE10.
