Skyhawks close out spring break trip with win

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 11, 2022) – Stonehill College closed out its spring break trip with a second-straight 7-0 victory, defeating Saint Johns University of Minnesota by that score line in a non-conference men's tennis match at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus tonight. 

Highlights

  • Freshman Guillaume Duhil de Benaze and junior Luke Nickerson led four double-winners for Stonehill on the night, teaming up for a win at No. 2 doubles, before leading a Skyhawks sweep of the six singles matches.
  • Senior Juan Camilo Riano Rojas and junior Ben Simmons rounded out the Skyhawks double-winners in the match, combining to clinch the doubles point for Stonehill with their win at No. 3.
  • Junior Christian Duffy and sophomore Louis Coppi each contributed singles wins for Stonehill.
  • Junior Peyton Fischer and freshman Ryan Will combined for a win at No. 1 doubles for St. John's.

How it Happened

  • Riano Rojas and Simmons clinched the doubles point for Stonehill with their 6-4 decision at No. 3 against the Saint John's pairing of sophomores Will Deters and Mark Rosen.
  • de Benaze and Nickerson had opened play with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 against junior Wil McDowell and sophomore Ian Aadland.
  • Stonehill swept the six singles matches to complete the win, led by de Benaze who posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles over McDowell.
  • Nickerson cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles against Rosen.
  • Coppi swept the first set on his way to a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles against Will, while Riano Rojas rounded out his two-win night with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over sophomore Daniel Perez.
  • Duffy notched a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles over Fischer, while Simmons rounded out the singles wins with his 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles against junior Will Fischer.

Up Next

Stonehill (6-2, 0-0 NE10) is off until next Saturday, March 19, when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule at home against Assumption University at noon. St. John's (6-2, 3-0 MIAC) visits Saint Olaf College on March 19 at 4:30 p.m.
