Skyhawks honor lone senior on Senior Day

EASTON, Mass. (April 13, 2022) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked No. 48 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II national rankings, battled past Stonehill College, 7-0, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Freshman Jonathan Berling, ranked No. 2 in the ITA Division II East Region singles rankings led five double-winners in the match with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles.
  • Senior Emmanuel Vacalares, junior Zachary Duboulay and freshmen Cade Nadeau and Boris Stastny rounded out the double-winners for SNHU.
  • Senior Fernando Torres, ranked No. 18 in the ITA East singles rankings, earned a point for the Penmen with his win at No. 3 singles.
  • Following the match, Stonehill recognized its lone senior, Juan Camilo Riano Rojas, an NE10 All-Rookie Team selection as a freshman that has posted a career combined record of 45-35 over three seasons for the Skyhawks. He owns a 20-19 career singles record and 25-16 doubles clip.

How it Happened

  • Southern New Hampshire swept the three doubles matches to earn its first point of the afternoon. The Penmen posted 6-0 wins at both No. 2 and No. 3, with Duboulay and Nadeau clinching the point at No. 2 after Vacalares and Stastny won at No. 3.
  • Nadeau earned SNHU's first singles point with his 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Riano Rojas.

    Torres pulled the Penmen within a point of the win with his 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 against Stonehill sophomore Louis Coppi, just moments ahead of Berling clinching the match win with his 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against freshman Guillaume Duhil de Bénazé.
  • The match wasn't without some strong matches at both No. 2 and No. 6 singles. Duboulay rallied from a set down to defeat Stonehill junior Ben Simmons at No. 6, 0-6, 6-1, 10-4, while Vacalares fought past junior Christian Duffy with a late break in the first set, 7-5, before taking the second, 6-0.

Stonehill (6-7, 0-5 NE10) is off until next Thursday, April 21, when it visits Franklin Pierce University for an NE10 match at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, April 23, to host Assumption University for its regular season finale at Watt Courts at noon. Southern New Hampshire (8-0, 4-0 NE10) visits Bentley University on Saturday at noon.
