Stonehill rally falls short after forcing extra session at home

Kevin Gilmartin tied up the game in the 89th minute for Stonehill with his first goal of the season.

EASTON, Mass. (September 7, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team was edged by Mercy College, 2-1, in overtime on Friday evening in non-conference action on Skyhawk Field.

Sophomore midfielder Ryan Flynn (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) squashed the Skyhawks comeback bid with his first goal of the season at 95:17 as he charged an attempted clear from Stonehill's back line and one-timed the loose ball from the middle of the box off of Adam Colella's (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) fingertips under the crossbar.

Junior midfielder Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) tied up the contest at 1-1 in the 89th minute by putting a free kick from about 25-yards out past junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) into the upper-right-90 for his first of the season.

Senior midfielder/forward William Koki (Aurora, Colo./Monroe College) put the Mavericks on the scoreboard first at 76:18 with a finesse shot into the lower right corner past Colella, his third tally of the season.

Colella finished the match with four saves while Papas turned away three. Both teams were even in the shot category with ten apiece. Mercy won the corners matchup 7-4.

Stonehill (1-2-1, 0-0-1 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday, September 11 as the Skyhawks travel to the University of New Haven for a 4 p.m. start. Mercy College (4-0-0, 0-0-0 ECC) heads to Saint Anselm College on Sunday, September 9 at 1 p.m.
