The Details

  • With less than two minutes (01:40) left in the first period, the Purple and White struck first when Heath sent a stretch pass from the Hawks blue line to Nehmer. From there, the senior put on a strong move toward the slot and put home the opening Stonehill goal and the squad headed into the second with a one-goal advantage.
  • In the second, it was more of the same, with hard play back and forth. However, with under four minutes (03:13), the Skyhawks doubled their lead courtesy of Cady. After Ireland pushed the puck ahead to Schwenninger, he found an open Cady who put a shot on net. Despite Howard making an initial stop, the puck snuck its way over the line for the powerplay goal.
  • However, Saint Anselm cut the deficit to one nearly a minute later (02:29) when Brackett put home a one-timer as the Hawks went into the final frame down one.
  • At the 11:17 mark in the final period, the Hawks evened the contest at two when Lyons initially had a shot on net that rang against the pipe. But Hayes ended up corralling the rebound and found an open Grace who put home the equalizer.
  • Fron that point on, Stonehill had multiple chances for the game-winner as the Skyhawks peppered Howard with three shots but were unfortunately turned away each time as both sides headed into overtime.
  • Overtime was played hard just like every other period and with each side having taken just three shots combined, it was Stonehill who would come away with the overtime victory. With just 14 seconds left, Heath corralled a free puck on Stonehill's side and pushed his pass ahead to Pineo at the blue line for the break-away game-winner.
