The Details

  • Less than five minutes into the contest, Stonehill struck first after Schwenninger won the face-off and got the puck over to Rapalje who found an open Ireland for a quick 1-0 advantage. The Skyhawks struck again with less than 10 minutes in the opening period (8:55) when Schwenninger won another face-off and the puck found FitzPatrick for a wrister that went past Schlyter and double the Stonehill lead.
  • However, just 48 seconds later, the Roos responded and cut the deficit to one courtesy of Robinson and the squads headed into the second half at 2-1.
  • Similar to the first, the Skyhawks got on the board less than five minutes in when Martignetti snuck the puck past Schlyter for a 3-1 advantage. Four minutes later, the Purple and White capitalized on a power play opportunity when dished out his third assist to Pineo which made it 4-1. For Schwenninger, it is the second time he finished with three assists.
  • SUNY Canton eventually would cut the deficit to two later in the frame (12:09) after Headland found the back of the net and the Roos continued their momentum heading into the third when Jakobsson made it a one-goal game (4-3) with 14:29 left to play.
  • Despite the Roos scoring the last two goals, Stonehill responded just 20 seconds later when FitzPatrick collected the puck off a SUNY Canton miss and found Horak up the ice who put his shot past Hooper and made it a two-goal game again (5-3). But SUNY Canton would not go quietly as they trimmed the Skyhawks lead back to one again off the stick of Sipperley with 13:59 remaining.
  • Stonehill once again responded with two straight goals to ultimately put the game out of reach courtesy of goals by Heath and FitzPatrick which made it 7-4. Despite a late Roos goal with 33 seconds left, it was not enough as the Skyhawks held on for the 7-5 victory.
  • FitzPatrick had a strong day between the pipes where he recorded a career-high 44 saves which topped his previous best, 43 saves set on this day last year against the University of Southern Maine.
