The Details

  • The first period ended scoreless but Stonehill had plenty of opportunities as they outshot the Corsairs, 13-8. Rapalje led the Skyhawks with four shots in the period, all of which were on target. Stonehill's defense and FitzPatrick also did their job as the sophomore netminder came up with big-time stops including two right before the end of the first at 19:36 and 19:47 when Ryan Mascali had two great looks but were turned away by FitzPatrick each time.
  • As the second period got underway, both sides continued their strong defensive play but with less than five minutes left in the frame (3:08), the Skyhawks broke the scoring open courtesy of Pineo. After Cohen swung the puck over to Ireland, Pineo sent the puck past Davidson for the 1-0 advantage.
  • However, minutes later with 1:25 left, UMass Dartmouth pulled within one when the Corsairs took advantage of a powerplay opportunity when Weinbrenner cleaned up the rebound off Hanley's initial shot.
  • In the final period, the Corsairs threatened to even the contest multiple times including a point where Brandon Clark put a shot on FitzPatrick early (01:58) but FitzPatrick turned him away to preserve the one-goal lead.
  • With a little over five and a half minutes left in the contest (5:46), the Skyhawks got the insurance goal they needed when Cohen and Ireland helped set up Rapalje for the open look and put Stonehill up 3-1.
  • From there, UMass Dartmouth rattled off five shots on FitzPatrick but was stonewalled each time as the squad held on for the 3-1 win.
  • FitzPatrick has now posted 25 or more saves in three of his last four starts.
