Pioneers score twice in three-minute span late in third, Maresca posts six-save shutout in goal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 20, 2023) – Sacred Heart University scored both goals within a three-minute span late in the third quarter and made in stand to preserve a 2-0 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast Conference field hockey action at Yale University's Johnson Field this evening.

Highlights

  • Junior goalkeeper Samantha Maresca made six saves in preserving Sacred Heart's first shutout of the season and the first of her career. Five of her six saves came in a scoreless first half as Stonehill finished with a 10-9 edge in shots and produced five penalty corners, compared to two for the host Pioneers.
  • Senior Claire Skumurski and junior Aine Keaney scored the goals for Sacred Heart to clinch the Pioneers second NEC win.
  • Junior Shannon Conte finished with two saves in goal for Stonehill.

How It Happened

  • Stonehill outshot Sacred Heart 8-1 in a scoreless first half, collecting four of its five corners over the first 30-minutes of play.
  • Sacred Heart got a foothold on the game with five shots in the third quarter, breaking through with Keaney's goal with 6:09 remaining in the frame.
  • Skumurski extended the Pioneers lead just 2:21 later with her third goal of the season.
  • Stonehill was limited to two shots in the second half and was unable to break through with a goal.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill and Sacred Heart are now in a four-way tie for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming NEC Tournament with two Conference games to play apiece. The Skyhawks are 1-1 against the three teams they are tied with, posting a win over LIU to go with today's setback to the Pioneers, and will host Wagner College next Friday at W.B. Mason Stadium.
