Guckavan and Ephraim combine on Broncs goals as Fulton posts three save shutout

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (October 8, 2023) – Rider University scored two second half goals off penalty corners to pick up a 2-0 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast Conference field hockey action at Ben Cohen Field this afternoon.

Highlights

  • Senior Kiera Guckavan and freshman Willemijn Ephraim combined on both Rider goals with a goal and assist apiece.
  • Senior Carlee Fulton made three saves to preserve the win and her second shutout of the season.
  • Junior Shannon Conte notched five saves in goal for Stonehill, yielding just one of the two goals as the Broncs sealed the win late after being removed for an extra field player in an effort to gain an equalizer.

How It Happened

  • Conte made four of her five saves in a scoreless first half, including three in the second quarter, as Stonehill also fended off three penalty corners in the first quarter by Rider.
  • Rider was able to grab the lead five minutes into the third quarter as Guckavan went to goal after her insertion on the Broncs fourth corner of the game and scored off a pass from Ephraim for her first goal of the season.
  • The Broncs sealed their second NEC win after Stonehill had removed Conte for an extra field player late in the fourth as Ephraim netted her fourth goal of the year with 1:58 to play off a corner pass from Guckavan.
  • Fulton made all three of her saves in the second half, including one in the fourth quarter just prior to Stonehill going without a goalkeeper on a corner.

Stonehill (2-10, 1-2 NEC) returns to action on Friday, when it visits Merrimack College for an NEC matchup at Merrimack College at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks will host Colgate University at Northeastern University's Dedham Field in Dedham, Massachusetts, next Sunday, October 15, at noon, while returning to W.B. Mason Stadium on Sunday, October 22, to host Saint Francis University for an NEC matchup at noon. Rider (5-7, 2-1 NEC) hosts Sacred Heart University on Friday at 7 p.m.
