Dartmouth Pulls Away Against Field Hockey, 6-1

 

Browne's two goals leads Big Green to season-opening win

HANOVER, Mass. (September 3, 2023) – Dartmouth College pulled away with three goals in the fourth quarter to open its 2023 season with a 6-1 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference field hockey action at Chase Field this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Senior Lila Browne  scored two goals and classmate Bronwyn Bird and sophomore Olivia Galiotos each added a goal and assist to lead Dartmouth to its season-opening win.
  • Five different players scored goals for the Big Green on the afternoon.
  • Sophomore Ava Carlson finished with two saves in the Dartmouth goal.
  • Senior All-American Raegan Hickey scored the first goal of the season for Stonehill, while junior Shannon Conte registered a season-high 11 saves in the Skyhawks cage.

How It Happened

  • Dartmouth grabbed a two goal lead in the first quarter with a pair of goals in the opening 7:45. Galiotos scored off a rebound 3:39 into the game for her first career goal, before Browne netted her first of the day four minutes later when she took a pass from fifth-year Meg Barnes in the center of the scoring area and pushed it through the back of the goal.
  • Stonehill was able to settle into the game and after a scoreless second quarter, Hickey potted the Skyhawks first goal of the season 6:36 into the third on their third penalty corner of the frame off a pass from senior Claudia Crowe to draw back within one.
  • Dartmouth restored its two-goal cushion less than three minutes later as Bird scored off a feed from Galiotos at 39:06.

    The Big Green broke the game open with a three-goal fourth frame, with Browne's second of the afternoon, assisted by Bird, coming 3:52 into the quarter as Dartmouth scored twice in the opening four minutes.

Noteworthy

  • Conte, an All-Northeast Conference second team selection as a sophomore, made her 18th-straight start in the Stonehill cage and recorded double-figure saves for the 11th time in her career – first this season.
  • Hickey's goal is the 15th of her career, while Crowe dished out her seventh career assist.

Stonehill (0-3, 0-0 NEC) is back in action with a pair of games at Hofstra University next weekend, starting against the University of California on Saturday, September 9, at 2 p.m. The Skyhawks home opener is scheduled for Friday, September 29, when they host Fairfield University for a Northeast Conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m. Dartmouth (1-0, 0-0 IVY) hosts Quinnipiac University on Friday at 3 p.m.
