Rhodes four goals leads Golden Bears past Conte's 14-save effort

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (September 9, 2023) – The University of California erased an early deficit to claim a 9-1 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference field hockey matchup hosted by Hofstra University at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Postgrad Daniella Rhodes scored four goals, including three in the first half to lead Cal to the non-conference win.
  • Postgrad Bente Baekers added two goals and an assist for the Golden Bears, while fellow postgrad Kitty Baccanello netted a pair.
  • Postgrad Cato Geusgens dished out two assists, while sophomore Olivia Sharratt chipped in with a goal and assist for Cal.
  • Sophomore Tina Jolly made three saves in the first half of action in goal for the Golden Bears, before giving way to classmate Audrey Post for the second half to make one stop.
  • Junior Shannon Conte registered a season-high 14 saves in goal for Stonehill.
  • Senior Claudia Crowe scored the lone Stonehill goal on the afternoon.

How It Happened

  • Crowe gave Stonehill a quick lead when she deflected a shot from senior All-American Raegan Hickey into the back of the cage just 2:21 into the contest.
  • Cal answered 97-seconds later when Rhodes scored her first of the afternoon off a cross from the left side by Baekers at 3:58.
  • Sharratt pushed the Golden Bears in front on a penalty corner with 3:31 left in the opening frame, assisted by Geusgens and senior Claire Hind.
  • Cal took the 2-1 lead to the second quarter and took control with a three-goal second, keyed by back-to-back markers by Rhodes to finish off her hat trick.

Noteworthy

  • Conte, an All-Northeast Conference second team selection as a sophomore, posted double-digit saves for the second-straight game and 12th time in 19 career starts.
  • Crowe and Hickey each notched a point for the second-straight game.
  • Crowe's goal is the sixth of her career – but first since October 13, 2021, against No. 4-ranked Assumption University when she netted five as a sophomore.
