#10 Stonehill Fires Past Saint Michael’s, 4-2

Ingersoll nets pair as Skyhawks score three second half goals

COLCHESTER, Vt. (September 14, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked 10th in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II preseason coaches' poll, scored three goals in the second half to pull away and claim a 4-2 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Duffy Field this afternoon.

Senior All-American Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) scored a pair of goals to lead Stonehill to its third-straight win to open the season. The Skyhawks also got goals from sophomore Elizabeth Thornton (Needham, Mass./Needham) and Lauren Giordano (Watertown, Mass./Watertown), while seniors Gina Sheehan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), Kelsey Davis (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and Emily Coholan (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) each dished assists.

Junior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) made four saves to preserve the win in goal for Stonehill. The Skyhawks finished with a 14-9 advantage in shot for the game and a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.

Michael's. Sophomore Morgan Mazanec (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional) dished out two assists for the Purple Knights, while junior Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree, Mass./Quabbin Regional) finished with four stops in the cage.

Stonehill and Saint Michael's traded first half goals less than two minutes apart. Thornton opened the scoring with her first career goal at the 23-minute mark with a backhanded shot into the right side. Miller leveled the match 1:55 later on a penalty corner with Mazanec and junior Hannah Beardsley (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) notching assists on the play.

Ingersoll sent Stonehill on to the win with two-straight goals as the Skyhawks netted the next three goals in the second half. She scored her first of the season off a Davis corner and stop by Sheehan 3:52 into the second half. Ingersoll added her second at 45:42 off a feed from Coholan to put the Skyhawks up by two goals. Giordano wrapped up Stonehill's scoring with her first collegiate goal on a breakaway at 53:54. Saint Michael's got a goal back at 59:45 with Davis' first goal of the season off a Mazanec corner.

Stonehill (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits 5th-ranked Merrimack College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks home opener is Thursday when they host American International College for a non-conference clash at 7 p.m. Saint Michael's (0-3, 0-1 NE-10) hosts Bentley University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
