NECBL Announces Fan Vote Selections
EASTON, Mass. (July 27, 2018) – Stonehill College senior right-handed pitcher Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) has earned a spot in Sunday's New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star Game, hosted by the Valley Blue Sox, at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Massachusetts, through the League's 30th Player Fan Vote.
Young, who is pitching for the New Bedford Bay Sox, will be a member of the South All-Star Team at the NECBL's All-Star Game on Sunday. NECBL All-Star Game festivities get underway at MacKenzie Stadium at 9:30 a.m., with Major League Baseball Scout Showcases, before the full teams arrive just after 11:30 a.m., the Home Run Derby at 3:30 p.m., and then pregame ceremonies commencing at 5:10 p.m. Gates open for the public at noon, with general admission tickets priced at $10.00 each. Fans can also watch the game online via necbl.org.
Young, who is the first Stonehill student-athlete to compete in the NECBL All-Star Game since Armand Rugel, '15 did so as a member of the Newport Gulls in 2014, has enjoyed a strong summer on the mound this summer for New Bedford as he continues to work his way back following an injury that forced him to sit out the 2017 season and limited his time in 2018 for Stonehill. In 13 appearances (three starts), he has logged 24.7 innings with 30 strikeouts and only 13 walks, for a 1.50 WHIP. He is 1-0 with two saves and a 3.64 earned run average for the season. Young made five appearances, four starts, for Stonehill this spring, posting a 1-2 record, with a save, and 3.76 ERA with 29 strikeouts and just 15 walks over 26.1 innings.
Young, the 2015 NE10 Rookie Pitcher of the Year and All-Rookie Team selection, has made 31 appearances, 18 starts, over his Stonehill career. He has posted a 10-9 record overall, with two saves, and a 2.34 ERA, 133 strikeouts and just 48 walks over 146.0 innings.
Stonehill finished fifth in the Northeast Division this spring, just shy of making playoffs for the second-straight season, with a 17-21-1 overall record and a 10-15-1 mark in the NE10.
