Baseball Falls to Chestnut Hill and Wilmington

Rocco connected for two doubles, his seventh of his career and fourth of the season

MIAMI SHORES, FLORIDA. (March 5, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped its opening doubleheader during spring break in a 10-4 loss against Chestnut Hill College and a 18-0 shutout against Wilmington (Delaware) University Monday afternoon at Feinbloom Field in Miami Shores, Florida.

GAME 1: Chestnut Hill 10 – Stonehill 4

For Stonehill, John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk), Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington), Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham), and Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) each tallied two hits for the Skyhawk's 13 hit total. Rocco connected for a two-run double, while Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) hit his first homerun of the season and fourth of his career.

The Griffin's got on board early in the bottom of the first inning after retiring the Skyhawks, as Eric Gilham flied out to right field driving in Ameir Uzzell from third for a 1-0 lead. Stonehill would not let Chestnut Hill get away too quickly with the game, as Jeremiah Vargas (Waterbury, Connecticut/Kennedy High/Taft School) started off the top of the third with a single and Orzechowski followed with one of his own and then Rocco tallied his second double of the game and fourth of the season scoring the sophomores for a 2-1 lead.

Stonehill extended its lead by one more, 3-1 in the top of the fourth with a lead-off homerun by Hurley, his first of the season and fourth of his career.

Chestnut Hill rallied in the next five innings to combine for nine runs off of 10 hits, including two three-run innings in the fourth and eighth frames. The Skyhawks were only able to cut the deficit to three, 7-4 in the top of the eighth as Joyce singled and Kelleher scored from third.

GAME 2: Wilmington 18 – Stonehill 0

The Skyhawks combined for five hits and left four on base, as the Wildcats totaled 21 hits driving in 18 runs and leaving 16 on base.  

Wilmington's Brad Scull was able to keep Stonehill off the bases, striking out 10 batters in 7.0 innings, while Bryce Carney and Tyler Campbell each took an inning and struck out two and one batters, respectively, for a combined effort of 13 strikeouts.

Stonehill held a 2-0 deficit until the top of the fourth, when Wilmington's bats came alive and seven hits, including seven singles, drove in nine runs for a 11-0 lead. The Wildcats would persist and in the top of the sixth, saw two singles, a double, and a triple connect for five more runs and a 16-0 lead for Wilmington.

The Wildcats wrapped up the game with two more runs, one in the eighth and ninth to add to its lead, 18-0, and third win of the season.

Stonehill (4-3) will compete at Lynn Baseball Field on the campus of Lynn University for a single game against Bloomfield College with a first pitch at 10:00 a.m.
