Assumption Outhits Baseball in 9-7 Loss in Home Opener

Sabo tallies his ninth double of the season, 14th career


Rocco tallied his fifth-straight game with a hit, as he also scored two runs and tallied one RBI

EASTON, Mass. (April 17, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell 9-7 to Assumption College on Wednesday, April 17 at Lou Gorman Field for its home opener, as the Greyhounds outhit the Skyhawks 14-10 in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play.

For the Skyhawks, Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School) went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, while Rob Duarte (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) hit 2-for-4 with one run scored, one RBI, one walk, and a double. Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) also connected at the plate, swinging 1-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, and two walks. Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) also registered an RBI, as he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a double. Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) knocked in the last RBI of the game as he went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Assumption saw two early outs in the top of the first, but after a walk the Greyhounds notched its first hit of the game and Michael White (Stamford, Connecticut/Stamford/Canterbury School) retired the side with a grounder stranding two on base. The Skyhawks responded with two hits of their own, as Rocco walked in the lead off spot and was quickly moved over with a ground out and put a tally on the board on Sabo's ninth double of the season, 1-0. Nunez also saw a double of his own, his third of the season, knocking in Sabo and Hurley for a quick, 3-0 lead.

The Greyhounds scored two runs in the second, one in the third, and one in the top of the fifth to give them their first lead of the game, 4-3, as Assumption was able to hold off the Skyhawks in four-straight innings allowing only two hits.


Duarte notched his first-career double

Stonehill tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth, 4-4, on Duarte's first-career double driving in William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) from second after he singled and advanced on a wild pitch with one out. The Greyhounds retired the side with back-to-back grounders before the Skyhawks were able to bring Duarte home.

Assumption did not let the tie last long, as a two-out rally in the top of the seventh led to three runs off two hits, including two singles and three walks for a three-run advantage, 7-4. Stonehill responded with a run in each of the last three innings, but Assumption notched two in the top of the ninth to keep the lead and its second win against the Skyhawks, 9-7.

Stonehill (12-16, 5-10 NE10) hosts Franklin Pierce University for its three-game series this weekend, starting on Saturday, April 21 with a doubleheader that will begin at noon. The Skyhawks will also host the Ravens on Sunday for a single game at 1:00 p.m.
