Baseball Earns 6-0 Shutout Against Saint Michael’s

BROOKLINE, Mass. (April 2, 2018) – The Stonehill College baseball team scored late in the game to earn a 6-0 shutout against Saint Michael's College Monday afternoon at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Massachusetts in Northeast-10 Conference play.

For Stonehill, freshman pitcher Jared Brooks (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) threw 7.0 innings, allowed only one hit and struck out nine batters for his fourth win of the season. William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) started the scoring for the Skyhawks as he went 1-for-3 at the plate earning two RBI and scoring one run. Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Massachusetts/Xavier) also connected on his fourth at bat going 1-for-3 also with two RBI and a run scored, while Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) went 1-for-4 for the Skyhawks third hit of the game, driving in one run. Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) totaled four walks in the victory, while Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) moved him over three times with three sacrifice bunts.

Saint Michael's was able to tally the first hit of the day in the top of the first with two outs as Moran singled to left center, but Brooks struck out his second batter of the day to end the inning.

Stonehill was held to no hits through five innings, but the Skyhawks were able to jump on board in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run advantage, 2-0. After a Purple Knights' pitching change, Rocco walked and Carey moved him to second to give him the ability to get in scoring range. Rocco then stole third and with one out and a runner on first and third, Kelleher singled to deep left field to score Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) and Rocco.


Joyce went 1-for-4 at the plate bringing in one RBI for the Skyhawks

The Skyhawks took advantage of in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead to six, 6-0, off two hits and two errors. With one out and a runner on second, Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) reached on an error by the center fielder advancing Rocco to third. After a strike out, Stonehill had the bases loaded and Downey singled through the five-six hole bringing in Sabo and Rocco, 4-0. Joyce followed with a single of his own to left center extending it to an extra base hit on the throw from outfield, bringing home Kelleher and Downey for two more runs, 6-0.

Aran Hamilton-Grenham (Woburn, Massachusetts/Buckingham Browne and Nichols) closed the game on the mound for the Skyhawks with two flyouts and a fielder's choice, stranding one on base in the top of the ninth.

Stonehill (11-8, 4-2 NE10) will take a few days off before hosting Adelphi University on Saturday, April 7 with the first game starting at noon at Lou Gorman Field in Easton, Massachusetts. The Skyhawks game at Assumption College tomorrow, Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m.at Rocheleau Field in Worcester, Massachusetts is postponed and no makeup date has been announced.
