Hurley was the only Skyhawk with two hits

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (March 27, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team got ahead early, but Barry's offensive attack was enough to come-from-behind for a 9-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Feinbloom Field, on the campus of Barry University.

For the Skyhawks (6-6), Jeremiah Vargas (Waterbury, Connecticut/Kennedy High/Taft School) went 1-for-4 with his second double of the season, which cleared the bases giving him a total of four RBI on the day. John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk), Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton), and Shane O'Halloran (Burlington, Massachusetts/Burlington) also tallied one RBI each and one hit each. Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored. On the mound, Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) struck out eight in 6.0 innings pitched, giving up four earned runs.

Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) got on base as the leadoff in the top of the first for Orzechowski to bring him home on his fourth-career double for a 1-0 lead with no outs. Orzechowski was able to slide over to third on a wild pitch, giving Sabo the opportunity to drive in the sophomore with a ground out to second, extending the lead to two, 2-0.

Barry was able to match Stonehill with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame as Jonathan Quintana homered to left, scoring Andrew Rapoza with two outs, 2-2.

Young went 6.0 innings striking out eight

With a scoreless second inning, Stonehill took advantage in the top of the third to take a significant lead. Sabo singled with out and Hurley moved him to third with his own single. Alexander Joyce walked, getting the bases loaded for O'Halloran who also singled putting the Skyhawks back up, 3-2. Vargas came up to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded Stonehill for the second time this game, and doubled to left field driving in three more runs, extending the lead to four, 6-2.

The Buccaneer's were only able to respond with one run in the bottom of the third, 6-3, and the Skyhawks took back the four-run lead in the top of the fifth with Vargas reaching on a fielder's choice and Hurley scoring from third, 7-3.

Barry did not give up, as they scored one run in the bottom of the frame, 7-4, and then two in the seventh and three in the ninth to take a two-run advantage, 9-7, for their first lead of the game. Stonehill saw three hits in the final three innings of the game, but were unable to take back the lead giving the Buccaneers their fifth-straight win.

Stonehill concludes their spring break trip with a game against Caldwell University on Sunday, March 11 at the Santaluces Complex in Palm Beach, Florida in the Palm Beach Challenge.
