Lee Hits Third-Game Winning Hit of the Season, Takes Game Three Against Assumption, 2-1, in 10 Innings

Three pitchers combine to give up four hits and only one run

EASTON, Mass. (April 27, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team took game three against Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College, 2-1, in the 10th inning, as Steve Lee tallied his third game-winning hit of the season. 

Shore earned his second win of the season

For the Skyhawks, Pat Hurley (Roslindale, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) held Assumption to five-straight scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out three. Aran Hamilton-Grenham (Woburn, Massachusetts/Buckingham Browne and Nichols) and Pat Shore (Norwood, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) combined for four scoreless innings and four strikeouts in four innings. Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) batted 2-for-4 with one run scored, as Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) crossed home for the game-winning run. Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) tallied his third game-winning hit of the season, after batting 1-for-4. 

Stonehill got one run in the bottom of the first inning, as Monte singled to right center with one out. He advanced to third on Bowler's base hit to right and scored off of Harrison Sabo's (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) hit deep into the hole near second base.

Assumption put pressure on the Skyhawks in the top of the second, as Trevor McQuade led off with a walk and R.J. Libby followed with one out and an another walk, putting runners on first and second. Mike Schmidt moved the runners over and reached first himself on a hard grounder to third. Hurley got out of the jam with a strikeout looking and a fly out.

Neither team got a runner on base until the Skyhawks' Monte singled down the right field line but Sabo doubled out with a grounder to second base. Klingensmith walked, but the Greyhounds got out of the inning with another grounder, holding the Skyhawks to a 1-0 advantage.

Hamilton-Grenham threw 2.1 scoreless innings

In the top of the sixth, Hunter Tralli walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch with no outs. Hurley got two-straight outs as Andrew Jaehnig lined to right field and Jake Byrne grounded out to second, moving Tralli to third. On a wild pitch that was thrown behind McQuade, Tralli crossed home tying the game at one, 1-1.

The Greyhounds got the bases loaded with three singles, as Shore struck out Libby and got Schmidt to ground out, getting out of the jam in the top of the ninth.

Monte led off the bottom of the ninth with single up the middle but was caught stealing second. Bowler also singled up the middle, but Sabo grounded into a double play to send the game into extra innings.

Shore held Assumption to no hits and got no one on base, shutting down the Greyhounds in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the frame, Klingensmith roped a doubled to right center for his first hit of the game and with one out, Lee battled at the plate and launched the ball over the right fielder's head, hitting the base of the wall for a walk-off double, scoring Klingensmith from second.

Baseball (13-24, 7-11 NE10) travels to Saint Michael's College for a three-game series, starting with a single game on Saturday, April 29 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a doubleheader on Sunday.
