Baseball Outhits Bentley, But Falcons End Up On Top, 7-5

Bowler leads the team in RBI (18) tallying one against Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 18, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team is now 1-1 with Bentley University in the series after a 7-5 Northeast-10 Conference loss Tuesday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Orzechowski batted 2-for-5 with one run scored

For Stonehill, freshman John Orzechowski (Monroe, Connecticut/Masuk) went 2-for-5 with one run scored and a stolen base, as Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) also went 2-for-5 with one run scored and a RBI. Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham), Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree), and Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) tallied the other RBI in the loss.

Neither team scored in the first inning, but Bentley left a runner on third in the bottom of the frame before the Skyhawks got out of the inning.

Stonehill drove in two runs in the top of the second, as Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) led off with a single to left field and Lee doubled with one out to score Sabo. Nicklas followed with a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Lee from third for an early 2-0 lead.

Bentley was able to take the lead in the bottom of the third off of two sacrifice fly balls from Nick Neshe and Peter Bocchino, while Brandon Grover scored from third as Max Troiani reached on an error by shortstop, 3-2.

The Falcons continued scoring as three more runs put Bentley up 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Ryan Beradino singled to right field scoring Christopher Butler from second and advancing Grover to third. Beradino stole second to get in scoring position for Austin Farry's two-run single to center field.

Stonehill was able to get Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) on second and William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) on first in the top of the fifth, but the Falcons' Bill Sullivan retired the side with a strike out and a ground out.

Bentley recorded another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth as Beradino flied out to center field scoring Grover from third with one out, extending the Falcons' lead to five, 7-2.

The Skyhawks rallied in the top of the seventh with two outs as Jeremiah Vargas (Warterbury, Connecticut/Kennedy High/Taft School) walked and Orzechowski singled to right field to bring up Monte to score Vargas from second. Bowler followed with a single to right field scoring Orzechowski from second and Monte advanced to third and then scored on a throwing error by the right fielder, cutting the deficit to two, 7-5.

Stonehill once again rallied in the top of the ninth with two outs as Orzechowski reached first on a single to shortstop and Monte tallied his second hit of the game driving the ball to center field. Both runners advanced a base to get in scoring position for Bowler, but Sullivan once again retired the side with his 13th strikeout of the afternoon.

Stonehill (9-22, 3-9 NE10) hosts Saint Anselm College tomorrow, Wednesday, April 19 on Lou Gorman Field with a first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
