Baseball Gets Ahead Early, Falls Against Bloomfield, 4-2

Hurley and Vargas tally the RBIs for the Skyhawks

BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 8, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team outhit Bloomfield University, 8-7, but was unable to hold on as the Bears won 4-2 Wednesday morning at Lynn Baseball Field in Boca Raton, Florida.   

Stonehill's Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) batted 2-for-4 with a double, as Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) and Jeremiah Vargas (Waterbury, Connecticut/Kennedy High/Taft School) both went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Bloomfield's Justin Reina went 2-for-4 at the plate with two stolen bases, while Christopher Morillo hit 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Only Bloomfield was able to pick up a run in the first inning, as Reina singled through the right side, but was left on third not able to get a run across.

Stonehill was active in the top of the second as Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) singled through the left side and Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) doubled to left field, advancing Sabo to third. Hurley grounded out to shortstop, but was able to drive Sabo in from third, 1-0. Vargas followed with a double down the third base line scoring Nicklas from third, 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Bears' Jonathan Carratala singled through the right side and later stole second and advanced to third on an error. Morrillo flied out to centerfield for a sacrifice fly scoring Carratala, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1.

Neither team was able to connect hits until Bloomfield came up to the plate in the bottom of the sixth as two runs scored off of four hits. Cristopher Cabral doubled down the left field line and Isaac Pichardo followed, singling up the middle tallying another run for the Bears. With only one out, Morrillo connected for a single to right center advancing Azmir Garcia to third and scoring Carratala for his second run of the game.

Stonehill was only able to get one hit in the bottom of the ninth from Hurley, as the Bears took the win, 4-2.

The Skyhawks (3-8) face Nyack College tomorrow, Thursday, March 9 at Paul Demie Mainieri Field on the campus of St. Thomas University with a first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
