Baseball is Victorious in 5-4 Walk-Off Win Over Saint Anselm

Skyhawks have given up six total runs in the complete three-game series against Saint Anselm

EASTON, Mass. (May 1, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team was victories in its third contest in a three-game series against Saint Anselm College as the Skyhawks swept the Hawks, giving up only six runs against them in the three games played. Stonehill defeated Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Anselm 5-4 in regulation on Monday afternoon on Lou Gorman Field.

Hurley had a day at the plate batting 3-for-3

For Stonehill, Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) batted 2-for-5 with the game-winning run and a double, as Alex Hurley (Rumford, Rhode Island/Worcester Academy) went 3-for-3 with one run scored, one RBI, a double, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly. Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) also made a strong contribution to the victory, as he batted 2-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI.

Stonehill got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, as Hurley launched a stand-up double down the right field line, drawing the throw to the plate, but Lee was safe at home for the first run. Stonehill tallied its second run of the game as back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and Matthew Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) flied out to right field for a sacrifice fly bringing in Hurley from third.

Stonehill extended its lead by one, 3-1 in the bottom of the third, with one out as Lee reached on a fielder's choice and Sabo was out at second as a Hawk tossed the ball to second base getting him out, but driving in Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) from third.

Saint Anselm cut the deficit to two, 3-1, in the bottom of the fourth as Bodi grounded out to first base, but McKeon scored off of Bodi's hit. Parent singled to right field after the second out of the frame and Turner advanced to third, as Wadington moved to second, but was tagged out on a relay from right field to catcher.

In the top of the sixth, Wadington kicked off the frame with a single to center field and he advanced on a wild pitch, as he advanced to third after Bragole singled to shortstop. With no outs, Bragole singled to shortstop and with a first-and-third situation, Turner singled to left field and Bodi advanced to second driving in Wadington. Turner was called out at third, as McQuarrie reached on another fielder's choice, and Crandell singled through the right side bringing home Parent from second.

The Skyhawks picked up another run in the bottom of the eighth, 4-4, as he drove in one run to give the two teams its first tie of the game. With another sacrifice fly, but this time from Joyce, Sabo was able to score from third.

Stonehill shut down Saint Anselm in the top of the ninth, as with two outs, the Skyhawks tallied three walks, and scored one of them on a wild pitch in the dirt.

The bottom of the frame saw John Orzechowski (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John II) ground out to shortstop and Monte triple to left center. Bowler recorded on the Skyhawks' walk off hit in the bottom of the ninth, as Bowler reached first base on a hard hit ball to left field. With one out, Stonehill held the Hawks to one run allowed, one hit, one error and one left on base in the bottom of the ninth, holding Saint Anselm to 5-4.

Stonehill (15-26, 9-13 NE10) hosts Bentley University in its final regular season game on Tuesday, May 2 with a first pitch slated at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks will honor its seven seniors prior to the Tuesday afternoon game on Lou Gorman Field.
