Cardano leads three double-winners for Greyhounds

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 10, 2023) – Loyola (Md.) University rode three double-winners to a 5-2 decision over Stonehill College in a non-conference dual match at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Center this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Junior Matt Cardano led three double-winners for Loyola in the win. He was joined by classmate Oliver Davey and freshman Dylan Koziol in notching wins in both singles and doubles play.
  • Cardano and Davey combined for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles for the Greyhounds, while Koziol and freshman Trevor Girandola teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
  • Cardano followed with a tight 7-5, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles against Stonehill freshman Mateo Mallen.
  • Davey and Koziol added wins for the Greyhounds at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively to clinch the match win.
  • Sophomore George Bulger battled past senior Luke Nickerson in a third set tiebreaker after the first two sets were separated by just a break each way, finishing with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 win at No. 5 singles.
  • Freshman Mathias Langaard won for the second-straight match for Stonehill, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against Girandola.

Stonehill (7-9, 0-2 NEC) heads back north for its next match at Quinnipiac University for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Loyola (3-6, 0-1 Patriot) visits Goucher University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
