Stonehill Boasts Finalists for all Four NE10 Student-Athlete Awards

NE10 Virtual Awards presentation set to run tonight via NE10 NOW & social media at 7 p.m.

EASTON, Mass. (June 7, 2021) – Stonehill College is the lone Northeast-10 Conference institution to feature finalists for all four of the NE10's annual end of the year student-athlete awards, the recipients of which are scheduled to be announced via the Conference's Virtual Awards Night presentation tonight via the league's YouTube and Facebook pages at 7 p.m.

Stonehill seniors have been well represented this spring, featuring finalists for all four of the NE10's major student-athlete honors for Woman and Man of the Year, as well as Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Stonehill has collected four NE10 major awards all-time, led by former cross country runner John Monahan, '00, who earned the NE10's first Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2000, followed by ice hockey standout Dana Borges, '13 as the inaugural NE10 Man of the Year in 2013. Cross Country/Track & Field All-American Alex Demeule, '19 was named the NE10 Man of the Year in 2019, before volleyball standout Rachel Dunlavy, '19 earned NE10 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year last spring.

Stonehill is the lone institution with finalists for all four end of the year awards this spring, led by volleyball graduate Sophia Poveda who is a finalist for both the NE10 Woman of the Year and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Fellow graduates Derek Ivey, from the football program, is a finalist for the NE10 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while track and field standout Michel-Ange Siaba is a finalist for the NE10 Man of the Year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NE10 is unable to hold its annual banquet for the second-straight year, but remains committed to honoring student-athletes, teams and faculty from its 14 member institutions. On Monday, the night that the NE10 banquet would have been held, the league will continue to recognize some of its most outstanding individuals. NE10 Commissioner Julie Ruppert will be giving opening remarks at the start of the show. 

The NE10 Awards Show will announce winners for the following awards:

  • Man of the Year
  • Woman of the Year
  • Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
  • Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year
  • Dr. Dave Landers Faculty Mentor Award
  • Presidents' Cup seasonal champion (2021 spring)

How to watch:

With 23 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. Stonehill has won the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup six times, all coming within the last 15 years, after receiving the Cup for the winter sports season in 2019-20 while holding an overall lead in the standings prior to the remainder of the athletic calendar being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March. Stonehill won seven NE10 Championships during the 2019-20 academic year, with six programs earning NCAA Division II Championship bids. The Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first ten years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 92% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for third in the NE10 and 18th among all NCAA Division II institutions, with seven Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%.
