Petti Awards highlight departmental awards for academic year

Stonehill Academic Awards History

EASTON, Mass. (February 10, 2021) – Stonehill College has announced its Fred C. Petti individual and team recipients, to highlight academic honors for the 2019-20 academic year.

Fred C. Petti Individual Awards are presented to one male and one female student-athlete at Stonehill who have earned the highest grade point average among all student-athletes at the College during that academic year. The Petti Team Awards are presented to the one men's and one women's team at Stonehill with the highest combined GPA during that academic year. Fred Petti, a member of the Stonehill Athletic Hall of Fame, was the College's first softball coach and also served as Vice President for Administration that helped to oversee and develop the growth of Stonehill Athletics to its current standing of 20 varsity teams, as well as serving on numerous committees that are connected with Stonehill Athletics.

Five graduated student-athletes earned the women's honors for the academic year, having all recorded perfect 4.0 grade point averages over the fall and spring semesters.

Stonehill's men's and women's cross country programs received the Fred C. Petti Team Academic Awards. It marks the fourth-straight year the women's cross country program has received the annual award, and seventh time over the last 20 years. The men's cross country program earns the Petti Team Academic Award for the first time in six years and ninth time overall since 2001-02.

The Stonehill men's and women's basketball programs were also recognized for showing the highest increase in team GPA from the previous academic year. The Northeast-10 Conference Champion women's basketball program recorded a 0.24-point increase in its GPA from the previous year, while the men's team GPA increased by 0.19. Both squads also performed on the courts in 2019-20, as well as the classrooms, by earning NCAA Tournament bids prior to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

With 23 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. Stonehill has won the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup six times, all coming within the last 15 years, after receiving the Cup for the winter sports season in 2019-20 while holding an overall lead in the standings prior to the remainder of the athletic calendar being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March. Stonehill won seven NE10 Championships during the 2019-20 academic year, with six programs earning NCAA Division II Championship bids. The Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first ten years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 92% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for third in the NE10 and 18th among all NCAA Division II institutions, with seven Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%.
