Volleyball Caps GCU Lions Invitational with Two Wins

Skyhawks finish 3-1 at season-opening tournament

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (September 6, 2015) – The Stonehill College volleyball team capped its season-opening trip in New Jersey at the GCU Lions Invitational today with a pair of wins over host Georgian Court University and Roberts Wesleyan College at the GCU Wellness Center. Stonehill dropped just one set over the two matches, defeating Georgian Court 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 25-13) in the morning before sweeping Roberts Wesleyan 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 26-24) in the afternoon contest.

Senior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) led the Skyhawks against Georgian Court, recording nine kills and nine digs in Stonehill's four-set victory. Sophomore middle blocker Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West), who was named to the All-Tournament team, added nine kills to go with five block assists, and sophomore Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) led the defensive effort with a match-high 17 digs.

Stonehill took the opening set by a 25-20 score, before dropping its only frame of the day with a 25-21 loss in set two. The Skyhawks pulled back ahead with a 25-22 win in the third set, before cruising to a 25-13 victory in the decisive fourth frame.

The Lions were led by junior outside hitter Jennifer Smith (Redlands, California/Redlands), who tallied nine kills and nine digs. Classmate Kelsey Oliver (Scio, Oregon/Skyview) handed out a match-best 27 assists to go with six digs, while freshman Peggy Rosario (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/Academia Santo Tomas de Aquino Superior) added seven kills and nine digs.

Stonehill 3, Roberts Wesleyan 0

Stonehill capped its trip in New Jersey with its first sweep of the season, handing the RedHawks their fourth loss of the weekend. Senior outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) hit .400 and recorded 15 of the Skyhawks' 31 kills in the match, while junior Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) totaled 23 assists and seven digs.

Senior outside hitter Kate Steger (Hilton, New York) paced Roberts Wesleyan with eight kills, and junior libero Rebekah Sanchez (Haverstraw, New York) had a match-best 14 digs.

Stonehill (3-1) returns home next Friday to host the four-team Skyhawk Invitational at Merkert Gymnasium. Stonehill will take on Gannon (Pa.) University at 7 p.m. on Friday night, before facing Dowling College and Dominican College on Saturday.
