Volleyball Powers Past Assumption, 3-0


Senior Delia Phillips led the Skyhawks attack with 12 kills tonight.

Nasby, Phillips combine for 23 kills; Stonehill hits .271 on the night

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 27, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team downed Assumption College, 3-0, by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action tonight at Laska Gymnasium.

Senior outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) and sophomore outside hitter Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) both posted double-digit kills to highlight the Skyhawks offensive efforts on the road. Phillips notched a match-high 12 kills on a .450 hitting percentage with two digs, while Nasby registered 11 putaways on a match-high .500 hitting percentage. Senior Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) also turned in a solid all-around performance, compiling nine kills, ten digs and one service ace.

Junior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) ran the offense compiling a match-high 37 assists, six digs, four service aces and two kills. Stevens now has back-to-back games with 35+ assists. Sophomore libero Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) guided the defense supplying a match-high 12 digs.

Assumption senior middle blocker Tara Reilly (Northport, New York/Northport) was the bright spot for the Greyhounds offensively, as she hit .400 with eight kills. Collectively, Assumption hit just .133 with 27 kills and 16 errors in the match. 

Greyhound's sophomore setter Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, California/Sir Francis Drake) recorded 23 assists and three digs, while junior libero Maria Chrisom (Dover, New Hampshire/Saint Thomas Aquinas) finished with a team-best 11 digs.

Assumption jumped out fast against Stonehill in the first set, taking a 5-1 lead after a block by Olivia Burke (Salem, New Hampshire/Salem) and Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Georgia/St. Vincent's Academy). The Skyhawks recovered, rattling off seven consecutive points to take an 8-5 lead.  Stonehill built on its lead from there, never trailing for the remainder of the series and taking the first set, 25-17.

The Skyhawks took control with a five point lead early in the second set (13-8), but the Warriors chipped away at the deficit slowly, eventually pulling even at 15. The set would be tied again one more time, at 22, before Stonehill posted a three-point run highlighted by two kills by Nasby, to take the second set (25-23).

Stonehill took a 17-11 lead in the third set, before the lead ballooned to 24-17. The Greyhounds did make things interesting, winning 3 straight points to make the score 24-20, but Stonehill closed it out with one of Phillips' 12 kills in the match.

Stonehill (10-12, 4-6 NE-10) will be back in action on Friday evening with a Northeast-10 contest at Le Moyne College, while Assumption (6-14, 2-7 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Saturday for a noontime matchup.
