Stevens, Hitchcock post double-doubles in loss for Stonehill

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (November 14, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of New Haven by scores of 24-26, 25-19, 18-25 and 19-25 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action earlier today at Charger Gymnasium.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) and junior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) both compiled double-doubles to lead the Skyhawks in the loss. Hitchcock tallied her second consecutive double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs while Stevens dished out 35 assists, recorded 11 digs and also added five kills.

Sophomore middle blocker Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) posted a team-high 13 kills on 35 attempts for a .229 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) chipped in with six kills and 11 digs.

Defensively, sophomore libero Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) had a team-leading 18 digs to go along with a pair of assists. Junior defensive specialist Abby Harte (Dover, New Hampshire/Dover) added seven digs.

For the University of New Haven, Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colorado/Liberty) and Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, New York/St. Anthony's) combined for 28 kills, 18 and 10 respectively, to pace the offense.

Kristine Rios (Miami, Florida/Coral Reef) orchestrated the attack with a team-high 33 assists and also registered eight digs, three kills, three block assists and a service ace.

Down 1-0 in the contest, Weymouth powered Stonehill in set two with five putaways on seven attempts and two digs. The Skyhawks hit .237 as a team in set two tallying 16 kills on 38 attempts (seven errors).        

New Haven responded in set three with a .256 hitting percentage (13 kills, three errors, 39 attempts) to erase a chance at Stonehill taking the lead. Lee had four kills, freshman outside hitter Nicole Morales (Moca, Puerto Rico/Carib Christian) supplied five kills and the Chargers collected five team blocks for a 25-18 set three win.

Lee took over in set four with a team-leading seven kills on 14 attempts and zero errors. The senior outside hitter forced the score to 22-18 with her final putaway of the evening before Impellizeri slammed down a kill to end the match, 25-19.

Stonehill concludes its season at 11-15 overall and 5-9 in conference play. New Haven will travel to second-seeded Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, November 17th, in the quarterfinal round at the Franklin Pierce Field House at 7 p.m.
