Volleyball Splits Final Two Matches at Skyhawk Invitational

EASTON, Mass. (September 12, 2015) – The Stonehill College volleyball team wrapped up the Skyhawk Invitational tournament with a split in its two matches today at Merkert Gymnasium. Stonehill fell to Dowling College, 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 25-14) in the morning, before cruising to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-12) sweep of Dominican College in the nightcap.

Senior outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East), who was named to the All-Tournament team, averaged 2.57 kills and a team-best 4.14 digs per set over the two matches, while classmate Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) posted averages of 3.00 kills and 2.14 digs per frame.

Junior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) finished the day with 56 assists (8.00/set), and sophomore libero Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) totaled 25 digs (3.57/set).

Phillips paced the Skyhawks in the opener, recording a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Weymouth also finished with 12 digs and added nine kills, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) led the team with 18 digs in addition to seven kills and three block assists.  

Stevens dished out 30 assists, her second 30+ assist effort this season, and added 14 digs for her second consecutive double-double and third of 2015. Junior middle blocker Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) led all players with five block assists.

Dowling (5-2, 0-0 ECC) received a 16-dig, 12-kill performance from junior right side hitter Weronika Wiezik (Szczyrk, Poland), who was also named to the All-Tournament team. Senior setter Kayla Dillman (Rochester, New York/Victor) racked up a match-high 39 assists to go with ten digs, while classmate Jessica Kalbfleisch (Ridge, New York/Longwood) registered 26 digs and nine kills.

The teams split the first two sets, and Dowling jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the third frame before stretching its lead to seven (17-10). Stonehill would get as close as four (18-14), but the Golden Lions held on for the six-point victory to go up 2-1.

With the fourth frame tied 2-2, Dowling went on an 8-2 run and never looked back, leading by as many as ten (21-11) before closing out the match with a nine-point victory. 

Stonehill 3, Dominican 0

Stonehill rebounded nicely from its first losing streak of the season, as the Skyhawks hit .299 as a team en route to three double-digit set victories against the Chargers. Weymouth led the offensive effort with 12 kills, while Phillips and Manuszak totaled 17 digs each. Stevens also turned in another strong performance with 26 assists, seven digs, four service aces and two block assists.

Dominican (0-8, 0-0 CACC) was led by All-Tournament selection Angela Kim (Marlton, New Jersey/Cherokee), who finished with a match-high 18 digs. Senior setter Amanda Hallstein (Holtsville, New York/Sachem East) recorded 16 assists and ten digs, while junior Kera Dexter (Selah, Washington/Selah) added ten digs and five kills.

Stonehill (4-3, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., when the Skyhawks open Northeast-10 conference play at home against American International College.
