Sophomore Katherine DeLanty turns in strong all-around effort, hitting .400 with 12 kills, six digs, four blocks, and four service aces
EASTON, Mass. (September 26, 2015) – Stonehill College rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set, but LIU Post claimed the deciding frame to secure a 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-10) victory this afternoon in non-conference volleyball action at Merkert Gymnasium.
Senior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) led three Skyhawks in double-figures with 13 kills, while classmate Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) added ten kills and seven digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) had a strong all-around match, hitting a team-high .400 with 12 kills to go with six digs, four blocks (two solo), and four service aces.
Junior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) recorded a season-high 43 assists, her third 40+ assist effort in Stonehill's last four matches, while also adding 13 digs and a match-best five service aces for her fourth double-double of the season.
Defensively, sophomore libero Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) paced Stonehill with 21 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, New York/Hauppauge) registered a double-double for LIU Post with ten kills and 13 digs, while junior middle hitter Taryn McCullouch (Buena Park, California/Cypress) added ten kills.
Freshman setter Giulia Genna (Civitella San Paolo, Italy) finished with 34 assists and eight digs, and senior libero Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Roosevelt) led the defense with 21 digs.
Stonehill posted its highest hitting percentage of the match (.379) in the first set, registering 12 kills and just one error in 29 attempts, but it was LIU Post that took a 1-0 lead with a five-point victory. The Skyhawks evened the match with a second set victory, capitalizing on the Pioneers' .031 hitting percentage, before LIU Post bounced back with a three-point win in the third frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Needing a fourth-set victory to extend the match, Stonehill jumped out to a 10-5 lead early. LIU Post pulled back to within two (10-8), but the Skyhawks posted a 7-1 run to take control of the frame. Coming out of a Pioneer timeout, Stonehill continued to roll en route to a 13-point triumph.
With the fifth set tied 4-4, a kill by McCullouch sparked an 8-0 LIU Post run as the Pioneers took a commanding 12-4 lead. Stonehill was unable to recover, pulling to within five (13-8) before eventually falling 15-10.
Stonehill (6-6, 1-1 Northeast-10) will look to get back on track on Tuesday night, when the Skyhawks visit Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m. in an NE-10 contest. LIU Post (10-3, 2-0 East Coast) is also back in action on Tuesday night, as the Pioneers are set to host the University of Bridgeport.
